I'm specifically wondering if there are any good major public transit hubs to live by.

Uber/Lyft is LA public transportation and they're everywhere.

The MTA Gold Line (through Pasadena) and Red Line are your best bets. I'm not sure about the Expo Line (I've never ridden on it) but others can chime in on it if it's good for you. I'm sure where you have to go, but LA is not great for public transportation IMO as it doesn't get you everywhere you may need to be.

The best imo is anywhere between DTLA and Santa Monica near Wilshire, Santa Monica, Olympic and Pico Blvds. Rapid Transit/Metro buses run along these blvds 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Expo Line light rail runs between DTLA and Santa Monica. The Purple Line subway runs on Wilshire and Western in Koreatown to DTLA. There are plenty of stores restaurants, nightlife, coffee shops, cultural amenities, particularly along Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvds. Public transportation along these boulevards is very good imo. Probably the best in the region.

Many great places on the many Metro lines. LA also has one of the most extensive bus systems in the world. Most people in LA who say it’s impossible to get by without a car have probably never set foot on a bus or train.

not impossible just a pain in the you know what and time consuming because you have to use a combination of trains and busses. Not to mention dealing with dregs of society

If you are really carless I would suggest Chinatown or Financial district of DTLA where many to most bus and train lines converge. Though in reality only the Metro Red lines run rapidly. Most other forms of public transportation are pretty slow.

The problem isn't only living close to public transportation, it's having public transportation close to your destination too. You can live right next door to a train station but you might have to switch trains and switch to a bus or two to eventually get where you're going

I agree with you. I know many people who live in the city and utilize the light rail, subway and MTA buses to get around LA. I don't often use public transit, but I'm not a stranger to it either. I actually enjoy driving in LA and discovering new and interesting neighborhoods along the way. I'm an amateur photographer and LA is my muse.
