Well Los Angeles has the largest homeless population in the United States and is the homeless capital of the nation. 90,000 + homeless people which is more than SF, NYC and other big cities combined! I've done a lot of work with the homeless populations around here so I'm up to speed on all the stats and everything. It's a really sad situation. Skid Row is just horrifying. I had to drive through there at night one time... not a fun thing. The homeless in SaMo aren't incredibly scary to me but it probably just depends on which one you run into. You won't find more homeless people anywhere in this country than you will in LA.

Des is right about this. This is part of why I really encourage people to give to services that can atleast provide some services to these individuals, some of which also have small children.

But that is just me, this is what I do with my frustration, anger, and hopelessness about this situation. There are places out there doing what they can and they need support, lots of it. Of course every little bit helps and it does help. Maybe not as much as we'd like in OUR communities, but I have seen these people give some of the homeless population the help they need to become productive and even amazing members of the community.

I don't agree with the city of Santa Monica's decision to have lunch for the homeless in the nicest park overlooking the ocean at lunchtime, they could have it in a million other areas. But I don't live in Santa Monica, so my vote doesn't count. However, as I mentioned, I do believed they recently decided to change this practice.

The homeless advocates tend to hijack City Council meetings, Santa Monica and elsewhere, until they trot out ideas like the above. When put into practice, like feeding the homeless in parks, churches next to schools etc., they found that the homeless were screaming obscenities at little kids and everyone else. There's a great deal of mental illness within that condition, and one shouldn't pretend it's not there. Be compassionate, but remember it's neurological as well as economic. So why did S.M. go overboard initially? Does everyone here know that the nickname for S.M. is "The People's Republic of Santa Monica?"
