for rural i defintely think anything going out towards chino and colton. up by clarita i think its more suburban than rural. if you want large lots with big patches all around and horses and poorly lit streets then try going out off the 60 or the 10 freeways. otherwise anything in LA is pretty urban.

Some parts of Chatsworth are fairly rural, and there are horse properties in the area. As others have mentioned, Sylmar, Shadow Hills, Sunland, and Tujunga also offer this type of property. Besides those, in the same area is Lake View Terrace, and the La Tuna Canyon area of Sun Valley. Those areas also have horse property. A little further south towards Downtown L.A. is the area of Burbank around the Equestrian Center. I think all of these areas would be above your price range, but it still gives you someplace to start looking. That pretty well sums up the horse properties around the San Fernando Valley, except in the exclusive areas in the hills of Encino, Tarzana, Woodland Hills, West Hills, Porter Ranch, Northridge, and possibly Studio City. I don't know what you would find in the way of horse property in those exclusive areas, but if there is anything to be found, you can expect it to be very expensive.

I am a songwriter and I own a home in San Jose. I want to move where I can commute to the movies and gig out in L.A...but I am a single mother of two...I prefer a rural setting and family atmosphere. How can I live an hour or so away from L.A. and still built my life and community that is safe for my kids. Want the best of both worlds adn I want to buy a duplex for around 200,000 to 250,000. HELP!!!!

At this point, I have no clue. I'm not sure if it's better to move to wherever I get a job, or find a job wherever I choose to live.
$900?

Well anywhere within an hour of LA is either not rural or very expensive. I can suggest some small towns separated from other small or medium sized towns or cities by a few farms. Not all will be in Los Angeles County. I am thinking of maybe Santa Paula, Filmore, Acton, Agua Dulce, Beaumont, Ojai, and others I can't think of off the top of my head. You may need to spend a little more for some of those. For others, you will need to sacrifice the close proximity to Los Angeles. For example, Santa Paula, Filmore, or Ojai might work, but Los Angeles proper (excluding the San Fernando Valley) will be about 2 hours away, but you will however have Ventura nearby which is a bustling city when you consider how small the population is.

Nothing is truly what most people would consider "rural" in this area. If you want true rural, you will have to be well over 1 hour away from Los Angeles.
