Although this is a bit out of the way, my family and I drove from southern CA to Viriginia by driving through Vegas, UT, CO, WY, SD, MN, WI, the UP of MI, Toronto, then down through NY, NJ, PA, and MD. We didn't hit tolls until we got just outside of NYC. Saw a lot of very cool stuff and family on the way, but it did take us about a week and a half. Mt. Rushmore is very cool and so are the National Parks in Utah. Also, if you've never been to Vegas, i'd say its worth the stop.

My mother and I drove from NY to LA we never had to pay a toll. AAA mapped out our trip. Enjoy the drive.
