Some advice for moving to LA from Sydney
Hi Guys
I would like some advice as I am moving to LA from Sydney on a 3 year work contract (company sponsored visa)
Here are a couple of initial questions, if you could help out, fantastic!
1. Will my Plasma TV/Home theatre, Fridge, Washing machine work over there?
2. Can I get finance for a vehicle (business lease) if I have a work contract and car allowance? can i lease a second hand car aswell?
thanks guys for any info you can provide
regards

whether they will work or not, why would you want to schlep them across an ocean? three years is long enough to commit to new appliances.

Yeah, my company will ship a container for me so it not an issue.
If they dont work there I will need to sell them off here beofre leaving.
If they do work it will actually save me a bit of hassle

I don't believe any of your big appliances will work on our power. The US uses 120v 60Hz AC. I believe you use 220v 50Hhz AC power down there. Your smaller devices (like laptops, cell phone chargers, etc) that have universal power transformers will should work. Look at the transformers for the power input requirements. If it reads something like "120-240VAC, 50-60Hz" it'll work here. All you need for those is an adapter that lets you physically plug your Australian plug into our US wall sockets.

we believe LA will be a good experience, I appreciate your points on not leaving as we do have it pretty good here. But experiencing life and broadening our horizons cant surely be all that bad a thing?

you are coming to a job. if your company is paying your moving expenses, i assume you are a valuable employee who is relatively well-paid. you'll be fine. if you're sure you leaving in three years, there's no need to worry about the high cost of real estate, which for most people is the greatest impediment to living here.
