The valley is nothing but strip malls, one after another, all over the place. As I drive I often look at what stores are there and wonder why did all these people start these stores?

I don’t think they are called that anymore but developing countries. India has old and beautiful cities full of charm, history, art and culture and wonderful dining. Is it poor, of course. Are there slums yes. But it IS a developing country and has had 70 years to recover from olonization. US is the richest country in the world. It has no excuse to have the mind of povert it does.
Ow your turn

I have been to India twice, in 1974 and 2005...to Calcutta and Delhi and surrounding areas and villages of both...I have friends who live there now..

you are very far off the mark, those cities once had charm and were beautiful indeed, but quite a very long time ago...

they are now filled with more poverty, squalor, and disease than you could possibly imagine, the pollution is completely out of control, many times much worse than L.A...

And shocking for pretty much any westerner going for the first time. Sorry but you give a complete false assessment of India bordering on fantasy...and it is obvious to me that you have never been there at all.

BTW, I have studied Indian culture, philosophy, and religion since I was a teenager..I'm 64 now

Nobody denies India has immense poverty and many other problems. Yet it accepts refugees. It manages to resue people from hurricanes. Manages to conduct elections without fraud. With 85% participation. Provides healthcare and medicine cheap.
Are you seriously comparing the economic giant US with India? Why can’T we have affordable medical care and drugs?
Don’t make assumptions and all your learning has not helped you. I lived in India for seventeen years.

what does this have to do with refugees? election fraud, affordable medicine.. and BTW..millions upon millions in India are without healthcare or any of that, you don't know what you are talking about...

you are completely sidestepping the issue entirely, and as far as Indian politics are concerned they are some of the most corrupt on the planet without question...anyone who has ever lived there for even a short time knows this..

17 years living in India? You sure don't sound like someone who lived there or even visited...

sorry I don't believe you at all...not one bit.

aap sach kah nahin kar rahe hain..??

I lived in Shanghai for many years. The worst spots in L.A are definitely more ugly than some third world cities.

Hindi is not the only language spoken in India and not all Indians speak Hindi. And your sentence is awkward in structure. aapko kuch samaj mein nahi aata hai.
As everybody knows, apparently not you, India is not US. Nor does it have its economy. But still it strives to give its people what they deserve - education, health, and jobs.
It has huge slums and poverty, yet has beautiful cities, modern communication, cheap internet for the poorest, plush hotels and bars, multi-billionaires. Yes it has corruption at every level, so does US, from the President to my handyman.
You make no sense in comparing a US city to an Indian city as if you can actually compare.

Everything is ancient in China, as is India.
