I never knew this existed until today...

Quote:
Pacific Ocean Park was a twenty-eight acre (110,000 m²), nautical-themed amusement park built on a pier at Pier Avenue in the Ocean Park section of Santa Monica, California, which was intended to compete with Disneyland.[1][2] After it closed and fell into disrepair, the park and pier anchored the Dogtown area of Santa Monica.
It was there from 1958 to 1967.

Wow -- did anybody else here know about this?

I went there quite often. The denouement of the final episode of the TV series, "The Fugitive", was filmed at POP right after the park closed in 1967.

Do you agree with Wikipedia that the reason it closed was because of neighboring street closures? That doesn't sound like the whole story to me.

They had a ride that was like a big circle can. It spun around and centrifugal force pinned you to the wall and the floor dropped down.
Crying shame that all those kinds of parks are gone now. I don't think there was any admission, you could just walk around or pay for rides you wanted.

I honestly have no idea why POP closed. Every time I was there, there was no shortage of people. They had some great rides that other amusement parks didn't have.

We called it P.O.P. back then. It was a lot of fun....I agree with Patrolman about the rides.
