Thanks folks - this is what I find interesting. The huge variance in the expectations (understood that lifestyles vary for everyone).

I guess there are two things/points to consider:
1. What is a good salary/wage to maintain a reasonable living standard in the LA area. By reasonable I mean, you can afford to rent a clean and a safe apartment/house or buy one (reasonable in LA is probably $500k, versus $250-300k in Atlanta), eat out a few times perhaps, attend some entertainment events that aren't free and afford a vehicle without worrying about gas mileage, and most importantly save sufficiently enough

2. What is a good salary/wage 'increment' to accommodate cost of living for the same job/skills and same living standards.

I think maybe $150k or whatever other figures are out there aren't needed for point 1, but they maybe are true figures for point 2. Meaning, one wouldn't want to take a paycut or maybe even move with no pay increase at all from Atlanta to LA, unless for some pressing reasons.

I know people that live in OC that won't take a higher paying job in LA because they don't want to deal with the commute. I also know people that work in the LA area and live in Riverside County for the bigger cheaper homes, but they deal with 3-4 hour commuting daily.

10 yrs ago I was making $100K lived by the beach (Huntington Beach), eat out everyday (I didn’t cook), and still have lots of money to splurge. Then I got married, the married life provided the discipline I needed. We started to eat in, saved, and saved. My life & credit score improved and eventually was able to buy a house.

It can be done with a $100K. Welcome to California!

Thanks. As an update, I must have shot myself in the foot by citing my salary expectations (that included an adjusted COL markup). I heard back yesterday on the job application, and they won't even bring me for an interview (after initially asking me to book in flights to fly in for one) once I submitted my job application that asked me to indicate my salary expectations. I did my math and based on the insights from what people mentioned here, added the premium and it looks like someone else was willing to take up the role at a lower salary.

Oh well ! California dreaming (continuing to )
