Any recommendations for good mexican food in/around Hollywood or Fairfax district? I tried El Coyote based on a recommendation and I thought it was crap. Thanks!

El Coyote is a tourist trap. The only reason to go there is for the history and it's mainly historical because it's where Sharon Tate had her last meal before being murdered by the Manson family.

Jack in the box tacos are better than the crap they serve at el coyote. And i'm not being facetious.

In general the mexican food in L.A. has gone downhill over the past 20 to 30 years. There were far fewer mexican restaurants in the 70s and 80s but they were generally better.

Sorry, but no the Mexican Food has not gone downhill.

To the OP, you can try Yuca's, Guisado's, and El Zarape. Some like Guelaguetza but I am not a mole fan.

Absolutely has gone downhill. Used to be able to get the many different styles of tacos and burritos that you can find throughout mexico. Now 99% of it is basically the same.
Albondigas soup was easy to find. I haven't seen Salsas made with cream since about 1990.
Lotteria Grill was the last decent place but they've closed their Farmers Market location.

I used to like Casita del Campo on Hyperion in Silver Lake when I lived in SoCal. It’s goten way more expensive than what it was, but it’s still good. ElCoyote is worse than eating a frozen dinner plate.

Personally my favorite spot is Tlayuda La Restaurant. A nice spot with friendly staff that serves great Oaxacan food (sorta authentic with a bit of a modern twist. I usually get the Tlayuda Supreme and cant say enough good things. Its not the cheapest spot but definitely worth it.

Here is their site: Tlayuda L.A. – Mexican Restaurant (213) 261-4667

This looks really good, thanks!

I recently tried Zermeños nearby, I thought it was quite good as well. No frills.
