San Gabriel is a nice place, populated with Asians and hispanics and the odd pocket of russians in the mix. Quiet safe area i think.

San Gabriel I think is still dominated by whites, I grew up there and it was rare in the 50-60's to have anything more than a few Japanese in my class.

After the mess left from VietNam it brought many new Asians to the area.

Temple City Sheriff's next town over are still majorly white and find they won't help the Asians as fast as they will for whites showing there pregidous.

So there is some racial tension in the area, over all it a great place
Just stay out of South El Monte with Bloods and Crips fighting all the time

It's rude to say chinatowns unless you know for a fact that the area is called that. There are several Asian countries who are represented in the San Gabriel area including Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese and Indian.

Well when I went there it was almost just chinese that I noticed, I went around ate in some restaurants

I heard mostly cantonese

Does San Gabriel have more than one commercial hub then

Or are the other oriental ethnic groups not visible, if so then it really is not rude to call it chinatown, because that is what it is

unless I am mistaken

If the area is not called "chinatown" (and San Gabriel is not), referring to it as such is an ethnic slur.

from what i understand, most of san gabriel's asian population is taiwanese (mandarin speakers). if you go to adjacent towns like monterey park or alhambra, you might see a lot of mainland chinese, or you might see cantonese chinese. it really varies from town to town. arcadia also has a lot of taiwanese, but i think they're just one of several asian groups in that town.

overall i think san gabriel's a perfectly fine town - VERY asian with a good number of latinos as well (not a whole lot of non-latino whites, though), but if you can afford it, move to arcadia instead. nicer town with better schools.

Back to the original question at hand...San Gabriel is fairly nice area especially where it borders San Marino. Very beautiful neighborhoods and safe area. Soccer moms abound! I wouldn't want to live south of Las Tunas.

mrxalleycat is on a distinguished road
It is very safe or too safe......crimes rarely occur here because it goes against the high values that most Chinese people hold in society.... absolutely no homocides or crimes occurred in the last 50 years in this neighborhood...

There are no black people here which is ironic because it is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE compared to the inner city of LA. I repeat, you will not see any black or korean people here.

In the entire city, I can only spot out 2 Indians there and they both work at the 7-Eleven store. No offense
