Highland Park question
So my wife and I went to check out an apartment in Highland Park (Ave 55) about a block from the Gold Line station and absolutely loved it. What are your thoughts about the area? Are gangs a problem in Highland Park? We currently live right next to USC and haven't encountered any problems so far, but I don't know much about NELA. Thanks in advance.

I hear parts of Highland Park have gangs but I don't really know much about the area.
I have to go there tomorrow to pick something up and I drive on certain streets fairly often (York, Figueroa, Eagle Rock) but I can't tell you a whole lot. Nothing has ever happened when I've driven through there or stopped there.
You might check with whatever police departments are around there. Maybe it's like a lot of the rest of LA -- some blocks are good and some are bad?

I'm next door in Mt Washington. The 'deeper' you go into HP (meaning, west of Figueroa, south of York) the spottier. But you, like me will probably rarely need to go that way for any reason. The homes around Avenue 55 are beautiful and the access to the Avenue 57 HP station is great. My wife and I bought near the SWMuseum station for that reason primarily, not to mention the neighborhood.
There is a nice Farmer's Market on Tuesdays, on Avenue 57.
I have read about gangs for years but have not had any direct contact with them or their activities. I've been to Franklin HS a few times for community meetings (off Buchanon Street) and never had problems at all. I have certainly driven through there lots of times because it makes for a shortcut to Eagle Rock (nice up there, too). There was a flare-up last year over Latino gangs targeting Blacks, which is almost too ridiculous to mention.
Check my other posts- I went into some detail about the area.
If you were at Avenue 55 and Fig, you probably saw this:
Chicken Boy, the Statue of Liberty of Los Angeles
If you need anything else, let me know. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies UB50 and nick. To nick: would it be safe to walk from the HP Gold Line station to the apartment on Avenue 55 at night?

I've done it- don't see why it would be any different for you. My wife and I have taken the train to the Highland Theatre a few times. Got out late at night, walked to the station, got on the train, then back home. I think that would be Ave 57, actually. Antigua Bread is there across the street on Fig- lotsa people hanging around (in a good way, that is).

If you are not uncomfortable living near USC, you will be fine in Highland Park..Eagle Rock has never been a bad area, always better than Highland Park but had it's ups and downs, I have heard it is very trendy to live there right now, so Highland Park couldn't be all that bad..
As for gangs, believe it or not, gangs were in areas bordering Highland Park 50 years ago.

Highland Theatre, do you have any idea how long that has been there?

Highland Park has always struck me as a gritty neighborhood, a little bit more so than Echo Park, but not necessarily dangerous, as say South LA. I've never had a problem when I've gone there, but I admittedly don't know much about the place other than the fact that La Estrella makes outstanding tacos!
