Man.... have you people been to New York? You speak of trash, urine, and graffiti? Not to mention overpriced housing.

Default Light a candle...don't curse the darkness

Like anyplace, LA is what you make it. If you don't have the education, the resolve, the imagination, the resourcefulness, the versatility, the intelligence, the professional background, the flexibility, or the initiative to create a reality that is to your liking, don't blame the city. Blame YOURSELF. LA is what it is.

If you find yourself living in a dump section of the city, without the means to do better, upgrade your education and professional focus.

Don't curse the darkness...light a candle.

LA has areas that are dumps, but so does every city.

I think sometimes people who visit or first move to LA are surprised that it isnt what they thought. People seem to think that its all the glitz and glamour that their TV's tell them it is. In truth LA is a very gritty place and more urban than you would think (thats certainly not a bad thing). LA has always had something for everyone (outdoor activities, great dining, nightlife, diversity, amazing weather, etc.). Most cities dont offer a fraction of what LA has, yet some try to focus on places like Watts, East LA, McArthur Park, and East LA and try to label that as what LA is. Every city has places like that.

LA only has two things going against it: 1) Economy, 2) Cost of living. Other than that, its the best place to live in my opinion.

Lots of places have lots of illegals, have high stress, and smog. Those are not specific to LA. As to the ghettos, that is HIGHLY debatable. Ever been to Detroit, St. Louis, DC, Miami, or New Orleans? In no way is LA any worse than those places. On an international level, LA would be doing quite well for ghetto vs. non-ghetto neighborhoods in the city. As for high stress, given the size of the city, I think its better than most places that size.

You know, when I lived in LA... I spent a majority of my time in West LA, Santa Monica, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Burbank, WeHo, Hollywood, Brentwood, Westwood, and Woodland Hills.

None of those areas (with the exception of maybe Hollywood... but not even the parts that I frequented) could really be considered dumps. LA is what you make it and where you consider hanging out. I was still fascinated by areas such as Los Feliz, Eagle Rock, and Silver Lake... up and coming areas that I wouldn't consider dumps.

I guess you could look at the Middle of the Valley and South LA when saying it is a dump... but I think a majority of people would agree that those aren't the areas that come to mind when thinking of LA.

It wouldn't matter if it was locked. A new thread would just pop up with a "question" about LA which is no more than a thinly veiled troll post. That then would then become the catch all for everyone was has been spurned by LA to vent. So is the circle of life... errr... City-Data.
