Hi all,

Planning to relocate to LA..before I accept the offer..would appreciate some information abt housing...

Budget: $1000-$1300/month

Looking for 1 bedroom apartment..

(average commute + gas) vs (stay in Beverly Hills) aspect?

What do you guys do on weekends?

Thanks,

your budget won't get you into beverly hills except perhaps in someone's illegal garage apartment (bad idea!), so the balancing act you are contemplating is moot. to remain as close as possible to your workplace, and meet your other criteria, i would consider palms, south carthay, and miracle mile. palms is the least aesthetically pleasing of the three communities, but rentals are plentiful there, and it's cheap by westside standards.

here's a map to help you sort them out:

City of Los Angeles Map - Larger View

miracle mile is located in the section labeled "fairfax/mid-city west," just north of south carthay. beverly hills is half of the unlabeled area to the west. (the rest is west hollywood, in case you're wondering.)

Try katenik's suggestions of Miracle Mile or Fairfax district you might want to consider Culver City as well. The weekends depend on what your interests are. To apartment hunt try craigslist: los angeles classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events or Free Los Angeles and Orange County Classifieds - Recycler or if you don't mind paying for a list ($60) Apartment Rentals in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.

one-bedroom apartments in those areas are outside your stated price range. if you could add another $100, it might be worth a looking around; otherwise, i wouldn't bother, especially in westwood.

Los Angeles is ridiculously over priced and not worth the trouble to move to. Most people are moving away from here (which is why places like Portland and Seattle have experienced such a jump in population). There are places like New York and San Francisco where it's worth the trouble to try to find an affordable place to live, but Los Angeles is not one of them.

Face reality. If you are going to work in Beverly Hills you'll have to commute from an affordable place. If you are working elsewhere you'll be better off living near work. Beverly Hills is one of the most expensive areas of Los Angeles and you cannot expect to find economy lodgings there. You might consider Culver City (just south of I-10) or a similar area.
