Living suggestions
Hello,
I will be relocating to LA in 2 weeks for a job in El Segundo. My boyfriend does not yet have a job, but is involved in the entertainment industry so will likely be in Studio City, Burbank, etc. Can you suggest a good halfway point? Is Santa Monica realistic?
Thanks!

Santa Monica would be a drag for both you. You would have to deal with the 405 traffic everytime you go to work or out of Santa Monica. Anything in between the 405 and La Brea in Mid-City would be more realistic in my opinion. Unfortunately, you will always deal with the 405 but your bf can catch the 10 to the 5 and get to Burbank that way which is faster than taking the 405 to the 101. I suggest staying above Pico and West La Brea.

You will have to live south of Sunset Blvd. since commuting over the hill from the Valley would be an extreme hardship. Better to live south of Sunset and commute north into the San Fernando Valley, against the heavy traffic. Commuting south to El Segundo will be difficult too but not impossible.
Please note you will be joining the commuter culture. Both of you will be spending serious times commuting. Not only will you be contributing to the traffic that you will cause others, but you will suffer for it yourselves too. Maybe happiness lies in shared misery. Both of you face probable 45 minute commutes one way, maybe worse, possibly 60 minutes one way.
Or you can have a 5 minute commute and let him have 90 minutes each way. Or vice versa.
I wouldn't want to be either of you. My rule is 30 minutes commute maximum, and I wish more people thought my way.

What about the "etc."?
I'd bet there are some entertainment industry jobs closer to El Segundo to make this work? Yes, Studio City and BUR would be way, way out there but what about west LA, Beverly Hills, Hollywood? (I am not an expert on these towns but I think it is worth researching....)

Culver City will be a good mid point. It's a clean affordable nieghborhood and it is right next to Culver and Sony Studios so he might end up there. It's also close to 20th Century Fox. It's also not a horrific commute to Burbank and your commute to El Segundo will be a breeze.

You don't want to rely on jobs out on the fringe. You want to locate near the mother ship and then commute to the outlands when and where necessary. You will always find the best jobs near the mother ship.
Heck, there's even entertainment jobs in Valencia, out in the Santa Clarita Valley, including at least one studio. (I forgot which one, across the freeway from Magic Mountain.)
Get close to the mother ship or it will take off without you. Entertainment is a dog eat dog industry. You are either dog or dog food.

I don't know much about them, but there are some studios located on Rosecrans Blvd, west of Aviation Blvd. and about 4 miles from El Segundo. You might check out some info on Manhattan Beach Studios (built by Roy Disney) and Raleigh Studios.

I live in West LA near my brother. I work in El Segundo and he works in Burbank. My commute is 30 minutes and his is about the same.
