Hello everyone,
From what I see there are many cities in Los Angeles County but i'd like to know what cities within Los Angeles County you all here in the forums who have lived there "feel" or have formed an opinion about what cities/areas are the "best" or "worst" to raise a family in? If there are to many please tell me what areas to keep my family out of in Los Angeles County in terms of raising my children? I welcome and appreciate all honest opinions! Thank you kindly, Tiana Rose |

Wow. That's a big question! A lot has to do with what type of lifestyle you can afford. Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes, Torrance, Calabasas, Agoura, and Woodland Hills come to mind at first.

LA county is HUGE. some cities within it are very small. your question is impossible to answer, both in terms of where to go, and where to avoid. do you have someplace in mind?
that said, i'm a big fan of south/pasadena for families. Last edited by katenik; 04-29-2008 at 06:21 PM. |

its up to parents and their relatives to raise proper kids. i come from an area of town most people would consider unsuitable for raising kids, but i and my cousins(from east los and south central) are college educated. i would say that of all of my cousins 80% are college educated. From Cal to Harvard to CSULA. Further, many of my friends are college educated, some are not, but that does not preclude them from being great parents. As for raising kids, well for safety reasons you might want to keep them outta the hood. higher mortality rates. but most parts of LA are not that bad were you would want to stay out of. it just depends on what you like and expect from a community.
i love where i live. its a "south LA Suburb". its relatively safe, majority brown, clean (with some graf), neighbors are very friendly and helpful and i dont even have bars on my windows. but even then most people might look down on my slice of heaven... |

I do agree that you will get better responses by being more specific about the area you want to live in. That said, for my 2 cents worth, I'd say Monrovia, West Covina,San Dimas, Claremont, and Walnut would be great areas to raise a family. If you can afford it.

Lots of areas have already been mentioned. Several of the safest large cities in the nation are in the L.A. area, though not all are in L.A. County. Some of the cities in neighboring counties consistently rank high in the safe city ratings. Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley both come immediately to mind, and both are in Ventura County, just a few miles from L.A. County. Santa Clarita is another such city, and it is in L.A. County. I believe Irvine has made the list, as well, but it's in neighboring Orange County. Some of the better communities in the San Fernando Valley area (in L.A. County) are Burbank, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Woodland Hills, West Hills, Porter Ranch, and Northridge. Most of these areas are within the L.A. City limits. Some other nice cities in L.A. County are Glendale (at least parts of it), Pasadena, Arcadia, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Torrance, and Rancho Palos Verdes. Geographically, these are located in various parts of L.A. County. As you've already been told, there are lots of places in L.A. County that are safe, clean cities. I've mentioned the ones I'm familiar with, though I know there are others.
I would suggest that you look at various maps of L.A. County, then search this forum to find out about a particular area. There should be a lot of info on any place you choose. |

the border type cities seem to the the better ones for the most part. cities or areas in the heart of LA are more hit or miss. I prefer the southeastern area of the county. Long Beach, Lakewood, Cerritos, etc. Lakewood is an affordable and safe place with decent housing and lots of families. Great place for young boys as they have great youth sports activities/programs.

Yeah, in a lot of cities, there are lots of brown parts of towns that are seen as "dangerous", when theyre really not bad at all. Working class doesnt always go hand in hand with gang warzone. |
