Larchmont Village and Hancock Park are both really nice areas. Much more rat race than South Pasadena would be.

South Pasadena is a good option with some great walkable neighborhoods. I also would suggest Studio City.

You can check the area just west of Laurel Canyon Blvd and south of Ventura - Cantara Street, Hillslope, Laurel Terrace are a few streets that come to mind. Your only a couple of blocks away from shopping (Pier One Imports, Starbucks, Gap, CPK, Cold Stone Ice Cream) and there is a very good elementary school on Laurel Canyon.

You'll like Larchmont Village it's very walkable and family oriented. Hancock Park is also very nice and close to Larchmont, depending on where you are, you might even be able to walk to Larchmont. These homes are in a higher tax bracket, so those schools will be better in spite of being LAUSD.
