And im talking about the city, not the county.

seriously, this is sooo confusing!! What exactly is Los Angeles city? I've been there once.. I went to Disneyland in Anaheim, and thats about it.. Then i have a little look on wikipedia, and guess what it says?

Anaheim is a city in Orange County, California.

How can Anaheim be a city!? It's like in the middle of L.A. now, isnt it?! According to wikipedia it's not even in the same county as L.A.!

And Long Beach? I thought that was a part of L.A.? but nooo..

Long Beach is a city located in southern California.

And Santa Monica? It's like in the middle of "L.A."!!?

Seriously, guys. My head is THIS CLOSE |------| to blowing up!!

It is like saying that Manhattan is one city, and Brooklyn another one.. And then you have the City of Bronx. get it?? I'm having a hard time understand this..

What's so difficult about it? Southern California (often called LA by people from other parts of the county) is a huge region covering several counties and dozens of incorporated cities. Los Angeles is just one such city, albeit a large one. Anaheim, Santa Monica, and Long Beach are indeed incorporated cities with their own elected leaders, planning departments, police and fire departments, etc.

Okay. When you went to Disneyland, you were not in LA. Los Angeles is a city inside of Los Angeles County. Wikipedia is right on everything you looked up. Anaheim is not in LA county at all, it's a city inside Orange County. I am wondering why you thought it was in LA, and the only thing I can think of is that they named the Angels baseball team "The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim," when in fact, that is not even correct.

Long Beach is a city in Los Angeles County, but it is not a part of the city. Same with Santa Monica.

I'm not sure you'll get anywhere comparing these cities/counties with New York city since New York consists of boroughs and California does not.

Hope that helped a bit.

Kind of like the New Jersey Giants and New Jersey Jets.

The Los Angeles metropolitan area is very large and encompasses numerous cities and counties. Because of the pattern of development that has occurred in the LA area over the decades, there is not much open, undeveloped land that separates one city from another. All of the communities 'blend' together in one giant urbanized area with no obvious transition. It would be correct to say that Anaheim (or Pasadena, Long Beach, etc.) are in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area, but they are separate jurisdictions and are not 'in' the City of Los Angeles.

Keep in mind that the LA Metro area is about 100 wide from east to west and about 50 miles from north to south. Except at the edges, the boundaries of which are slowly moving outward, any land that could be practically developed, is developed.

The closest equivalent to boroughs in New York would be the various 'districts' like Hollywood, San Pedro, Encino, Highland Park, Panaroma City, etc.

I'd even call it 100 miles north and south too. San Clemente to Santa Clarita or Thousand Oaks is about that. Its even more if you throw in Ventura or the high desert. Most people just can't wrap their heads around such a huge region since most cities in the US have a relatively short distance from downtown to suburbs to farmland.

well, it sure is confusing!!

I thought Anaheim was just a part of L.A. city!

Its reeeeally weird how the cities are so close to eachother.. its nothing like that here in Norway.. I still don't get it, though.. When I look at a map of Cali, i see San Francisco way up north.. then Sacramento.. Santa Barbara.. and finally Los Angeles. And its huge.. All that i thought was Los Angeles is just alot of small-sized cities together + the city of Los Angeles, isnt it?

will someone please hand me a map of L.A. and the surrounding cities!?!?
