Read the fine print--no white guys need apply. I've known guys who have been board ready for two years scoring 20 points above the average and still haven't gotten a callback. Minority applicants get a free pass.

Whether you want to admit it or not, diversity has actually HURT the quality of LAPD officer, and of those that DO make it in, most only stay in long enough until they get a job with a department in a suburban area.

thing is, the flow of hispanic gangs is limitless until the borders are shut down. you'll ge surprised at the amount of 'soldiers' that are recruited when they cross the border. They are dispensable, and the supply is infinite.

and besides where are we gonna put them when we catch them? in our already overflowing prisons?

He is right. My best friend is a cop in Riverside city. After their probation is done, they all tend to move to the 'burbs. No cop WANTS to work Rampart, or Van Nuys.

Considering the quality of LAPD officers that we had back in the ''80s, it would be hard for the quality of the individual policemen to be beneath that of the Gates era. Next to New Orleans we may have had the worst police department in the whole country back then (our quality of officer certainly was far beneath that of the SFPD or NYPD).

Like it or not, taxes need to increase to pay for more cops, and perhaps housing incentives might also be in order to encourage more recruits to join the force.

Wanna bet? I'm also going farther back--to the Parker era. And no, I know of LOTS of PD's that were and are far more reviled than the LAPD.

So your answer is to jack up taxes--really? On whom?

All it takes is money and political will.
I agree with this, and I also agree we need more police on our streets. I used to live in Sunland. I don't know if things have changed in the past few years, but Sunland and Tujunga are in the City of Los Angeles, and there were only TWO squad cars patrolling that entire area. I know those aren't huge communities, but stilll...

Parker's philosophy of policing was wrong on so many levels that it's hard to find anything that was correct about it. And this isn't even touching upon the fact that Parker was an alcoholic racist.

He did have a brilliant publicity machine, however, and his men did love him. Considering that the LAPD badge back in that "L.A. Confidential" era was often a de facto pimping license, I'm not surprised.

Other than the New Orleans PD and maybe the Chicago PD, what other large police department was as hated as the old LAPD?

Re: taxes, yes, if one wants a better police department one does have to pay for it.

The Miami board makes this board look incredibly upbeat and optimistic.

For that matter, even the New Jersey board seems positive compared to the Miami board.

Default Reality Check

Everything in LA that a normal person woudl want to live in is $800k and more. Best neighborhoods are Palos Verdes Estates, Manhattan Beach, Pacific palisades, brentwood, but all of those come with a heavy price tag. Some better values are Huntington beach, Seal Beach, Yorba Linda, Orange, Fullerton and Los Alamitos.

It all depens on your interests, cash and what you can deal with. The most importnat advice I can give is to live 5 miles or less from your job. Traffic sucks
