I actually moved fm ATL to LA & circumstances dictated my return to ATL. I can not wait to return to Calif. Compared to other cities, to include certain european locations, I rate LA right up top. Every major city I have lived in ( +/- 25 yrs) have had the same negatives. Personally I have never had a problem.

if you are moving from London you probably losses the street smarts that anyone In a large city has and you will do fine. As an LA elite (someone who was acually BORN and RAISED here I can tell you it has a lot to offer. The simple way to survive here is DON'T TRUST ANYONE you meet on he street. If you are moving here to get into the industry just know hat you have about a 30% chance of even getting in. And, if you do get in, you'll most likely end up as a PA on some USC indie flick that no one will ever see. I'm a producer for a large network and I only got here because I busted my ass and got very lucky by meeting people in the industry. I'm not saying don't move here...just have a backup plan when the stars in your eyes fade. You are young though! You can afford to take risks and go on adventures. Best of luck to you!

Hi I'm Patrick and I'm 17 living in Toronto CANADA. I'm considering moving to LA once I complete my university education. Just wondering what LA has to offer in terms of "white collar" jobs. I'm either getting into law or business, and I'm unfamiliar with LA's economic structure. Here in Toronto there is an extreme abundance of finanical corporations and work opportunities but after visiting LA and So-Cal numerous times, I love it. The weather and the mood there is unreal. The liberal, laid back attitude. But would it be worth moving to try to land a job in the fields of law or business??

Default Living in Los Angeles

I don't know, I think if you have a dream of moving anywhere, you should go for it! Especially while you're young. If you don't follow those gut desires while you're young, life happens and then you don't get around to it. You may even regret it.

However, along with following your dreams, be smart. It's always good to research and have a plan. Save up money, read books, build a resume so you can get a job, and keep your head high.

I moved to LA after college. Then a year ago I moved to NYC. I missed LA, so I turned around six months later and moved back. SO take it from a southern girl who made her way to TWO of the world's biggest cities - go for it!

Check out survivethecity.com - Home if you want info about making it in Los Angeles. I started this website to help newcomers learn how to survive LA life.

Default LA Apartment costs

by the way, renting an apartment will depend on where you live and if you live with other people.

I rented a large 2-bedroom in the valley for $1600 with two other people. That cut our rent down to $550ish each. I currently rent a studio in Santa Monica (utilities included) for around $1000. A good rule of thumb is to spend only around 25-35% of your income on housing.

Check out survivethecity.com - Home for a list of all the different areas of LA - what they have to offer - their price ranges - tips and tricks, etc

Hi Emma,
I have just moved here from London.....you can get a nice apartment from $1000-$1500 Studio or 1 bedroom. You dont need to speak Spanish if you did that would be great but it's not essential to get by at all.
The only draw back is being under the Legal age to drink so going to clubs and bars would be a problem but you could get a fake I.D??
I'm new myself and I'm slowly finding my way around. The safety issue only applies if your really stupid and talk to wierdos (theres lots of them here!) If you've got friends here already then stick with them. There are a lot of people that talk crap in L.A personally I find it quite amusing...and draining at the same time.... but like I said if you've got friends already it helps. There are some English pubs here so if you get home sick and feel like a Ruby Murry then you can pop in anythime!! GoodLuck

There are a number of inaccuracies on that site in the description of neighborhoods. First off, Culver City, Palms and West L.A. have never been strictly Latino as a whole (although parts of Culver City are). Culver City and Palms have every ethnic group that lives in the L.A. area. West L.A. while diverse is mostly white although East Asians and Latinos have lived there a long time. (Persians arrived in the 80s, South Asians arrived more recently.) While Palms did see "white flight" during the 80s/90s it was never completely deserted by non-Latino whites even at its 90s nadir.

There's also a BIG difference in rents between Los Feliz and Echo Park. Los Feliz is far more expensive (although according to Sorcerer there are still a few cheap places to be found).

Also, there's no mention of how ghetto Van Nuys is (there's a mention of the porn biz but no mention of gang problems or how severe they are) and Woodland Hills is quite different from Panorama City or Sun Valley.
