Default how is it now?

My LA move plan has been scuppered by the plummetting UK housing market... I can't sell my house, even if i did manage to sell it now i have lost £50k worth of equit since october... so my plans need to be down scaled somewhat.

So how are things over in sunny LA... my friends tell me that the housing market over there is also very poor, lots of repo's... i guess that would mean there are some cheap houses to be had if ever i sell and manage to get out there?

Hey... at least the sun is shining in dull ole england today!

Rent your house in England, use the rent to get a place in LA.
If you don't like it you can go back ..nothing lost plenty of stories to tell.

PLEASE people! LA is way overhyped in multiple ways. First, it is not nearly as exciting for an extended period of time as people think. Second, it is not the hell hole that so many people make it out to be. I grew up in a small town in Minnesota, and moved out here 2 years ago. I fell in love.

For an 18 year old girl, if you are smart, LA is a perfectly wonderful place to be. My suggestion for your age is to live in Hermosa or Redondo Beach, and get a studio to yourself or find some roomates. You can easily find someplace like that for $900 or less. Be cautious of new people, but generally the people in Hermosa, Redondo, Manhattan Beach, and Santa Monica are very friendly. When I moved here I had people giving me their papers and offering me all sorts of advice about where to live. I can't walk down the strand without someone starting a conversation with me. There is a military base nearby, so you'll frequently encounter military men as well. I am married to one of them, and friends with many of them. Stay near the beaches and west of the 405, and you'll be just fine. As with any city, always be on your toes, but don't let all these pessimistic people dissuade you. Moving to LA is the best thing I've ever done. And if you don't get angry when you drive, then the traffic truthfully hardly ever gets really bad once you figure out where all the congestion occurs.

You live once, you're young once, and one of the best places in the world to be young is in LA.

Thank you.

What is your reason for moving here? Unless you have means to support yourself I would strongly advise against it. Los Angeles is expensive. And there are only so many places you can live. Assuming you are determined to move out here no matter what anyone says the only choice you have is to live in WEST LOS ANGELES. Anything east of the 405 turns to garbage and is NOT A SAFE PLACE to live. As a result you can expect to pay $1,200 MINIMUM for an apartment in a clean safe area in WEST LOS ANGELES.

If you are moving here to be an actress think carefully. There are so many here already it is not even funny. I went out on 4 dates with a girl who has been here since she was 18. She is 28 now.

LA is ... I want to tell you the truth but I cannot say it because it is not... politically correct... And I am afriad someone will google me.

Do not ever expect to own a house here. It is impossible. Also it took me 2 months just to get a place here. There are rent controls and it is very hard to find a place to live.

Again - do not even think about living anywhere east of the 405 freeway. It is garbage. Grafitti everywhere. Garbage blowing through the streets. Criminals everywhere. It looks like MEXICO. There was a time when these communities were clean and safe with good schools. Neighbors having Bar-B-Q's picnics in the street. Now it is absolutley disgusting. You will see when if you visit.

Again - WEST LOS ANGELES ONLY.

PS. You need a car.

Ha! Show me ONE place that is in Hermosa or Redondo for $900 or less that is not a shoe box. Please. For a regular normal, clean apartment it will cost you at least $1,200/month.

You forgot Marina Del Ray, West Hollywood, Palos Verdes, Pacific Palasades, and Beverly Hills. All are outragously expensive it is of course the people are nice they are not poor criminals they can afford the cost of living here. Santa Monica is the most expenisve "city suburb" in the USA. A shack costs 1 million dollars.

I pay $1,250/month for a one 1-/1 in West LA and I'm sick of it. The smog. The traffic. The TAXES OMG DO NOT GET A TICKET HERE or you are screwed. The crowds and the COST OF LIVING IS OUTRAGOUS.

There is somthing called "quality of life" which does not exist here and especially not East of the 405.

I would advise her not to move here unless she is rich.

as i read most the entries on this thread i get an enormose feeling of the grass is always greener. Yes i am UK based and am very passionate about going to LA. but it seems that someof the people that live there want to get out too. Surely this happens everywhere. I know a lot of my friends here woudn't ever contemplate leaving the UK they are very happy. I'm not. The same must apply for citizens of LA. I guess you just gotta follow your heart ?
