According to mapquest.com, Westwood is 11.18 miles from USC and the estimated commute is 16 minutes (of course traffic and your route would effect that time).

you want to live in the heart of bruin country while attending USC? are you looking for a beat-down?

seriously, though, that isn't a commute you want to make: long, tedious, and thoroughly unneccessary. there are plenty of places much closer and more convenient to USC than the westside neighborhoods you are considering. i would even prefer to commute to USC from pasadena, if it came to that.

Silver Lake ABOVE sunset is awesome... dont get it confused with Echo Park which is also cool but a bit more sketchy.

only move to silver lake if you are, or if you love Hipsters, indie music, all sexual orientations, diversity and tattoos...

we'd like to prevent the neighborhood from becoming anymore "west LA" than it has already started to become. thanks

That suprises me. Silver lake is surrounded by urban areas of Los Angeles but nothing is sketchy. It may not be suburban but it is livable and safe.

Search for Silver Lake (or Silverlake) on craigslist and you should find some listings. We've lived there for more than a year and really like it, tho we don't go to the gym or Starbucks. We walk to the park and the farmers market and enjoy the many hole-in-the-wall joints in the area. It's not for everyone, I suppose.

By the way, the rough boundaries of Silver Lake are Hoover/Fountain/Hyperion on the west. The 5 Freeway on the north. The 2 Freeway/Alvarado on the east and the 101 on the South. Roughly.
