Used to live in Playa del Rey and its nice however there are a few drawbacks....
Very close to LAX and you get A LOT of airplane noise especially of you live in the Southern parts of Playa. Also the planned LAX expansion is a major issue.
To be honest, Playa del Rey is not as nice as it used to be. I don't know if there are plans to redevelop but it needs it.

PDR is a pretty sleepy little place. If you're looking for local nightlife, MDR would be a better spot. And I'll second The Shack.

There's a place on Wilshire in SaMo called The Shack. Are these two places owned by the same people?

I posted a comment like this recently to another message re: Marina Del Rey and Playa Vista. I lived in Playa Del Rey at the Archstone apartment complex there. There were many reasons I did not like the building...it was a large, uncaring property management company who rented apartments out to thugs and hoods who wanted to go to school on basketball scholarships and they would trash the halls and march "ho"s up and down the hallways late at night. It was awful. I hated the bldg so I moved when my lease was up.
Now, as for Playa Del Rey, there were two things I didn't like: 1) it is becoming heavily influenced by Inglewood and other surrounding areas where gang culture is the norm. They are no doubt infiltrating Playa Del Rey, so soon, it will be lost to what is basically ravishing this city. 2) I found I had to drive to everything. There really is nothing in Playa Del Rey. You have to go to Marina Del Rey or Manhattan Beach for everything. Myself, I prefer to live in walking distance of a market or something in case of emergency.
Also the traffic along Pershing Avenue is a nightmare. Lincoln Avenue is so congested, it is spilling over onto Pershing Avenue which was just not designed for heavy traffic flow.
