I would suggest you consider staying in Santa Monica or West Los Angeles.
Do not stay in the san fernando valley or Van Nuys. I have met more than a few european vacationers who ended up in the valley thinking its 10 minutes from the beach or beverly hills.

If you are young and want to go to night clubs, you could consider one of the hotels along the sunset strip, but better to stay in beverly hills.

There are many options, depending on what your interests are.

Ahoy lad!
Here's an incomplete and informal travel guide for you..

Choosing a Hotel
Price range:
(300 and +) Leows in Santa Monica
(200 and +) The Peninsula Hotel, Four Seasons-Beverly Hills, The Beverly Hilton
(100 and +) Best Western, Holiday Inn, ...Many hotels in the Santa Monica/West LA Area
(50 and +) Search in the airport area and beach communities(Hermosa, Manhattan, and Redondo) Some motels on PCH are as low as $56.

Place To Avoid
In general, most areas are unsafe that fall under this criteria: east of 405 freeway, and south of the 10 freeway.
Compton
Inglewood
East LA
Parts of The Valley.. etc

Must See
The Grove-outdoor shopping center
Third Street Promenade-Santa Monica
Malibu(self-explanatory)
Venice Boardwalk(diverse and stimulating place)
Rodeo Drive
The Sunset Strip
Universal CityWalk
and Many More...!

Places to Eat
Anywhere on restaurant row on La Cienega Blvd.(Stinking Rose, Lawry's, etc..)
In N' Out(This is a must.)--Great for on a budget!
Gardens of Taxco(Mexican Food in West Hollywood)
Gladstone's(seafood. located right on the beach in the Palisades, but they claim "Malibu") http://www.gladstones.com/

Nightlife
Too many to name, just drive down Sunset Blvd or check out Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood. There's no shortage.

In September we're in the final strech of baseball season (playoffs) so you will definitely want to take in a game at Dodger Stadium.

Here's their Web site:
