"We" meaning in Madison, Alabama, or we in Los Angeles? Caltrans started installing these here in 2019.

They just repaved my street, an ordinary residential street. Instead of the broken white line, they installed rectangular yellow/orange things every few feet. They painted nothing on the street.

Is that the direction they're going in?

It depends quite a bit on the street and it's classification.

Unfortunately, your description doesn't help me much.

You can try reviewing the MUTCD Pavement Marking guide here: https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/pdfs/2009r1r2r3/part3.pdf

But to be honest, your agency (City/County) may have determined some newer practice has a higher safety value.

Isn't it safer to have the broken line painted there? It reminds people to not drift into the wrong lane.
Those little reflectors make the street seem naked.

In many cases, yes, it probably is safer, but there may be extenuating circumstances that the agency used in making their decision.

Wait, they just painted a broken yellow line down the middle. Not sure why it's yellow now, it used to be broken white.

It also took 2.5 weeks after repaving before they painted that.

Took awhile but I'm seeing more of those around my city. Looks like they'd be good for night driving.

I've seen stop signs with little red lights around the outside. I guess it's for visibility.
Is that also going to be a standard thing?
