Stupid question of the day: I know that Universal Studios is a theme park there, but are there also working set locations at the same site? (Did that make sense?) In other words, is movie/TV filming also going on within the same compound as the theme park, or are they just replicas that are used for tours and the like?

It is an active movie lot with filming going on daily. Commercials, TV shows, movies, etc are all filmed on the lot.

The smoke was really noticable in North Hollywood, Toluca Lake and the southern parts of Glendalea and Burbank.
Ha! You may be right...

I've heard talk that Universal was thinking about getting rid of the active studio portion -- the backlot -- (keeping City Walk/the public attraction) to sell off the land for condos.

Hopefully this wasn't on purpose as a precursor to that -- or if not on purpose, then used as an excuse to go ahead with plans for a sell-off.

Well they have rebuilt the backlot before, we'll cross our fingers they do again.
