I live in the "barren" San Fernando Valley. Here is a recent photo I took not far from my house. This is "barren?"

95 high and 66 low in LA is fine, but if you are talking about Tennessee 95/66 vs. LA 58/40, I'd take the LA 58/40. HUMIDITY SUCKS!

Default LA climate is not what people think it is

I think LA's climate is overrated IMO. Yes, 58/40 is better because at least you can dress up for it and be prepared. Hot weather sucks whether it is humid or dry. If it is past 95 I start to feel sluggish and lethargic. And also, hot weather combined with low humidity and smog aggravates my sinuses and dries my throat.

For those of you who think warm year round weather is so great you are free to stay in S. California. Seattle weather rules and LA climate sucks in some ways. So there is my answer to those you want to defend LA and its dirty, smoggy air. LA sucks compared to Seattle when you compare air quality and climate. We all have our own opinions and that's the bottom line.

Let me clarify what I said. I was trying to say that LA's climate outside of the beach areas is desert like, that's what I meant.

It would depend on what part of LA... some parts are drier than others.

Also, I don't live anywhere near the beach (at least 25 miles from the closest one) yet the photo I posted showed plenty of greenery.

Perhaps you are forgetting that the recent 95 degree temp at LA (actually, it did hit 100 degrees on one day) was during a heat wave. The average temp in LA. during the summer months is around 84 degrees... a very pleasant temp and far cooler than other cities like Miami and Houston and not much different than New York or Chicago (and LA doesn't have the high humidity those cities have).

I wouldn't exactly refer to S. California's weather as warm year 'round. You must be thinking of Honolulu! The average Jan. max/min for L.A. is about 65/48 degrees. And I will certainly stay in S. California... it is great going on night bike rides in January, during a Santa Ana wind event, when the temp is over 70 degrees... even at 8 PM!

Seattle's weather is much too overcast to "rule." I have never heard anyone (until now) praise Seattle's weather as great!
As for smog, my lungs used to hurt at times after exercising... that hasn't happened in 20+ years. The air quality is actually better now in LA than it was 20 or 30 years ago.

One thing about hot weather: 95 degrees makes even a cheap beer taste great. You can't say that in overcast weather. Then a cheap beer just tastes depressing.

Thanks for those actual figures, happ.
As can be seen, LA enjoys comfortable weather all year, no real extremes compared to other places, with plenty of sunshine which encourages outdoor activities. For instance, even though Bismarck, North Dakota, has very cold winters, there record maximum temp at that city is 114 degrees (in 1936)... 2 degrees higher than the record max at LA!
