you are confused because the OP is apparently confused. as you stated, crenshaw blvd. is a very long street that stretches from wilshire blvd. to torrance. crenshaw (also called "the crenshaw district") is only a small segment of it between jefferson park and the inglewood boundary, if one includes leimert park and hyde park (which all tend to overlap in my mind, but perhaps should not). the residential neighborhoods off crenshaw blvd. south to inglewood have been described accurately by cespeed above: they range from absolutely awful to hidden gem, with most falling somewhere in between until you cross slauson.
in inglewood, the stretch from florence to manchester (east to van ness) isn't a bad place to live as long as you don't mind older black folks who take good care of their modest homes. if that area had better quality commercial establishments serving it, it would pass for "nice" in any other part of town. south of manchester (which includes imperial), inglewood is various degrees of ghetto, with some decent bits hidden away here and there, mostly behind gates. it's safe for anyone to go to inglewood to attend an event at the forum, or go to the races, but large chunks of it should certainly be avoided if one has a mind toward moving there.

I adore katenik, but you cannot put Hyde Park and Leimert Park in the same category. It's like saying a Cadillac and a Bus are the same because they are both vehicles. Leimert Park is a very decent upper middle - middle class neighborhood and Hyde Park is a ghetto.

i don't put them in the same category in that sense. i meant only that i think of it all as "crenshaw." yesterday on the news they were referring to the neighborhood immediately west of crenshaw plaza as "baldwin hills." to me, that's "crenshaw," too.

I think they're get "Baldwin Hills" and "Baldwin Villiage" confusing at times when they're referring to the Jungles. I used think the Jungles was part of the Baldwin Hills neighborhood, but then I realized it was part of Crenshaw.

Some of it can be pretty hood, like the J's and areas South of Slauson.
Overall, it's a working class black community with some areas wrongfully receiving a bad rap (the parts with huge homes near Ktown, especially)

The Jungle (not Jungles) is the Jungle, Baldwin Hills is Baldwin Hills, Leimert Park is Leimert Park. Geographically they run along or near Crenshaw but they are separate and distinct neighborhoods. Why am I making such a big deal about the distinction? Because people who think "we are all alike" still exist and hard working, law-abiding, tax payers have earned the right to be separated from the 'hood rats. Even if we live near them.

spot on! the stretch of crenwshaw has some nice areas dont it?! i particularly like the areas just north and south of wa****ington @ crenshaw.
it is funny how some areas are gated tho. with one street that leads into the neighborhood. sorta meant to keep the riff raff at bay. but there are plenty of nice houses, and nice streets off of crenshaw.
the thing is that, even when you have a decent area, it is surrounded by not so great parts. for as nice as a place can be, you sometimes cant excape the knuckleheads. just be aware. but its not as bad as people think.
and the general consensus is that south of slauson is where it gets real bad. but only for a bit. also, the further east from crenshaw you go, towards the 110, the worse it is. all the way to alameda. pockets of nice neighborhoods exist, but still a bit gritty.
its hard to encapsulate an area as vast as south central. or crenshaw. especially when everyone has different parameters or defintitions. but ces did a spot on job. bu wherever you go in a large urban area : just be aware.

From Wilshire to Country Club, Crenshaw on the east in Koreatown and Hancock Park on the west; from Country Club to the 10, Crenshaw does a wonderful job of hiding very affluent homes (Windsor Square, Victoria Square and Wellington Square); on Crenshaw itself through that stretch and on through Jefferson it can be very rough and dirty. After Jefferson it cleans up as it goes into the retail district and the most influencial black neighborhoods in Los Angeles: Leimert Park. Unfortunately, just before Slauson all the way to Florence is the exact opposite: roughest, dirtiest parts of Crenshaw-Hyde Park. After Florence you're in Inglewood and it becomes a clean nice neighborhood again.

What a gross exaggeration! To be quite honest with you "South LA" got most of its negative reputation during the 90's (The LA riots and movies like Boys in the Hood, etc) Since that time the majority of the real gang activity has moved into the San Fernando Valley
A very strong(and successful) effort has been made by the upstanding citizens of South LA to take back their neighborhoods. I am much more afraid of driving through parts of the SFV than driving through the Crenshaw District of South LA.
Seriuosly, lets stop with the gross exaggerations!
