Anyone lived in San Louis Obispo? Did you like it? Or Sacramento?

I can't imagine SLO is any cheaper! Sacramento is cheaper, but really falls short of LA. Midtown Sac is nice, the rest is somewhat bland. Much hotter. No ocean. No mountains. Much less entertainment. You can get a nice house for cheap there though!

I lived in Lompoc (Near SLO). That area is hard because while it's cheaper (I had 2 bed apt for $600) jobs are hard to find and you will find yourself commuting very long distances to earn a decent salary unless you can work for the University. Sacramento is beautiful, very green, slow pace and way more affordable than LA.

First things first: It is not spelled Louis or pronounced with the French pronounciation Lou-ee. It is Luis, as in Lou-iss. I cannot tell how much this pronunciation annoys me and everyone else who does or has ever lived in San Luis. Everyone in California has Spanish cities and streets, and yet someone in LA decided to pronounce this one French??! -- And it stuck!! The Bay Area doesn't do this, by the way.

So, having said that, I refer you to my post here:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/4223280-post10.html

In which I give my spiel on SLO.

I lived in SLO. It's not a "cheap alternative" but it's nice. You can't compare it in any way to Sacramento. The big deal in SLO is getting a job that will support you. It's the tightest job market I've seen in California. It also has one of the prettiest walkable downtowns in the state. It's squeaky clean and not much crime. The sidewalks roll up early and at night it's so quiet it's eerie. I've seen many move to SLO, starve, and then go back where they came on borrowed money.

Have you looked in the less expensive parts of L.A. for housing? Highland Park is the best deal around right now. Leave L.A. because you want to, not because housing is expensive. I've found more opportunity here than any other place I've lived, and I've lived in many.
