Question Downtown Los Angeles: Will it ever become a real vibrant entity?

Will Downtown Los Angeles ever become a vibrant and important entity like the downtown areas of Chicago, Philadelphia. Boston, Seattle, and other cities with great urban cores?

Downtown LA will probably never be the central focal point of the city the way downtown Boston, Philly, etc. are. There's just too many other driving forces pulling people's attentions away from downtown (Santa Monica, Wilshire, Beverly Hills, Pasadena). However, I have no doubt that downtown will become much more vibrant in the near future. If you go down there today, it's amazing how many restaurants and bars are opening up and staying open past 5, when compared to how downtown was 10 years ago. Once LA Live is completed, that's going to take the area to another level, similar to what Hollywood/Highland did for Hollywood.

We are too big to have a central locust.

Sorry.

Downtown will develop into a more vibrant place than it is today. It has the potential to be a major transit hub for the region if all the MTA and HSR plans come to fruition. Not to mention the Broadway revitalization and the continued development of LA Live, The Grand, and Park 5th. I don't think DTLA will ever be Manhattan, but it certainly will improve and become a viable neighborhood to work and live.

I think downtown L.A. certainly has the potential to become a thriving work/live community. A lot of things have to happen first, though, like dealing with the huge homeless population (but not just shoving them off to other areas!).

its been vibrant enough for me and my partying ways since i was a teen.

with that said i have noticed quite a few differences since the mid to late 90's.
it is defintely more populated... by non brown/black people. but broadway has always been a shopping bazzar for many latinos. as have the alleys. lots of areas in downtown that people never knew about so then never went to.

now the night life is more varied. warehouses, old ball rooms and guerilla parties were really big for a long time. but with more permanent bars and lounges opening up, it has added to the variety. DT now attracts all kinds of people, where as before it was all of us crossing from the east side into DT.

its good to see that all different types of people are investing in the resurgence of downtown. it really is exciting to see.

and as Sandyco said, the homeless pop is an issue that has to be addressed accordingly. up to this point many have just been pushed east and south. i and friends of mine have all noticed the rise in homeless people in the areas adjacent to downtown (east and south). its ironic that the city says they are cleaning up skid row, but dont say what exactly is happening to the corwds that once inhabitied SR.

i wonder if sterling(clippers owner) will build the homeless service center for SR he proposed a couple years back?

who knows. in the meantime ill continue to sip drinks on broadway and beyond...

L.A will eventually have a more vibrant downtown, especially since City Leaders and Developers are realizing the potential, but I don't think L.A will just have one urban core, but multiple ones.

It has had many years and it's still a cesspool, so I don't ever see L.A. making good.
