As a BBQ fan from Texas the unfortunate answer is no. When we are in San Antonio one of our first stops is Rudy's, the original in Leon Springs. The best place I have found is on Vermont just west of Crenshaw, I haven't been there in along time so I don't know if it's still good. I'll try to figuer out the name and post it. Lots of places to avoid like Hoggly Woggly in the valley and Barn Burner in Pasadena. We go to Barn Burner occasionaly because it's close by and the kids have fun in the game room, but the food is just not that good.
My theory is that the AQMD won't let the restaurants operate a good smoker, plus most of the places have sauces that aren't right.

I second Lucille's, especially the original location in the Long Beach Town Center. Very busy, good food, live music Fri and Sat nights, and I've come across many people from the south who really enjoy the place!

I really miss Tex-Mex... you can't find ANY in SoCal! Much of the US has a lot of Tex-Mex, but here, it's completely unheard of. Is there ANYWHERE that has any Tex-Mex in SoCal?

Try Nick's Taste of Texas in Covina. It's a bit out of the way so I don't get there much. The owner is originally from San Antonio and I found out about it from a write-up in the San Antonio paper. You will definetly feel like you've gone back to SA at this place.

Unfortunately, this is the type of attitude I get everytime I ask for Tex-Mex. I've tried several SoCal "real" Mexican restaurants, places that come highly recommended -- they're fine restaurants I am sure. But they are not Tex-Mex, and to be honest, I prefer Tex-Mex chains such as Don Pablo's. That's just my personal preference.
Tex-Mex is a style of cuisine I enjoy. For some reason, that is looked down upon in Southern California. I enjoy spicy food. I prefer ground beef to chopped steak -- not just in Mexican vs Tex-Mex, but in all foods. I also enjoy chimichangas (ground beef). These are things I'm looking for. They are not "real Mexican", but they are "Tex-Mex." They are two different styles of food, and I don't understand how the presence of one precludes the presence of another.

Thanks -- I will have to try this place for lunch sometime! The food looks good -- the only problem, they close too early for dinner for my liking, as I like to eat dinner around 9 PM, and even on weekends, they are closed by then!
