Hey everyone,
Let me start with an introduction. I'm a recent graduate from college (degree in Cinema-television) and I'll be moving out to LA to pursue a career in...you guessed it! film and television!

I know this topic has been beaten to death (I've read 15 pages worth of posts on moving to LA) and you're all sick of it but since the city is always changing I feel like there might be new info. Also, everyone has there own unique take on LA so it seems like it would be helpful to continue the discussion.

Anyway, I'll be moving to LA from Dallas in the next few weeks. I spent last summer at a place in Beverley Hills adjacent and really enjoyed it but, it's a little out of my price range now.

What I'm looking for is a smallish apartment in the 400 to 700 sq foot range. I'll be there by myself so I don't need a lot of space. Cost is the number one factor for me. My price range is the $900 - $1300 range not including utilities. If something pops up a little higher with utilities a part of the rent then I'd be willing to take that.

After price, safety is a concern. Obviously, the crime rate is WAY over-hyped but still, I don't want get myself into a rough area and not realize it. Last summer I was picking up some equipment from the Silver Lake area (I think it was Silver Lake, but I got lost for an hour so who knows) and it seemed a little rough. Dallas has a much higher crime rate per capita than LA and I've never had a problem. Thing I'm most concerned about is auto theft.

The main places I've been looking at is Mid-Wilshire, Hollywood, and Downtown. I'd love to live near the beach but I doubt I could afford it. Everything I've read in the forum says that Santa Monica is uber pricey so I haven't even really bothered.

I'd love to hear from the forum as to where your personal picks are. Someone posted a top ten list but it seemed like most of the top ten areas required a significant amount of money (Brentwood, Beverley Hills). I don't mind living in a smaller place if it's in a fun area however, I'm kind of boring and don't really go to club and thus, don't mind places that don't have nightlife.

I'd really appreciate your input! Thanks everybody!

I think an area that you might like is near the Grove shopping center (3rd and Fairfax). I'm not sure what the price range is but you should be able to find something w/in your price range. Good luck.

santa imonica is a great place to live, but you are correct in saying that is very expensive. if i didn't live here, i would probably end up in los feliz. i really like that area with its central location, access to griffith park, and fun village area with restaurants and bars. the rents there are also less than santa monica so you should have no trouble finding and apartment in your price range.

Oh, I've found plenty of apartments under $1300. Everyone had me so worried that LA would be very expensive. Apparently, the cost of an apartment is directly proportional to the closeness to a club. I've narrowed it down to three neighborhoods: Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire, and Downtown. I've found a lot of stuff in Echo Park but I really don't know much about that area. Any opinions? Also, does the LAPD break their crime stats down by neighborhood?

I don't think it's rents that are out of control (relatively speaking) in LA, so much as it is the cost of actually buying a home.
