To the OP: You will be just fine downtown, remember you have the municipal superior courts with its zillion depts down town, hence why there are law firms there. As somebody else mentioned it's worth checking out Pasadena, where you will also find guest houses and older quaint houses that are right up your street. Its close proximity with easy freeway access is ideal if you work down town. If you are a culture vulture there are a few museums including the Norton Simon and The Asia Pacific, the Pasadena Play house and a couple of others. It's even got the Pasadena Symphony.
I like OldTown Pasadena...one of those areas that have been gentrified with restaurants, bars and shopping. It's worth checking out.
Oh and quite a few judges I know of, live in San Marino which is adjacent to Pasadena.

I'm downtown 5, sometimes 6 days a week and I have never seen anything close to gang activity. Once outside of downtown sure, but away from the nickel within downtown not really.

Nickdahammer, we've been down this road before. The loudest railers against downtown have never lived or worked in the area.

And there are those of us who have grown up in LA who know from experience that DLA has nothing on CC. And as stated, most of the lawyers who have offices there do it strictly because of the close proximity to the courts and hightail it out of DLA as soon as possible. If the OP wants to work near a decent place to live, (s)he'll pick CC, if (s)he doesn't care and wants to live near dirty gang infested neighborhoods, then DLA. Of course the OP may decide to work Downtown and live elsewhere like 98% of the people who can afford to live in a decent neighborhood do.

Yep, being from L.A. you know it all. How dare people living and working downtown have an opinion on downtown L.A. No one said CC was a bad place in comparison to DLA just DLA wasn't bad. Anyway, several people I meet from the city seem to have never left their side of town. I had to ask 8 people, all natives, before I found one that had visited the Getty Center and could tell me information about it so no natives aren't the the "end-all be all" on everything L.A. Many people that move here (some have lived here for years) spend a great deal of time learning about this wonderful city and appreciating it a lot more than some of the natives. BTW, good luck with your move to Arkansas.

And then there are those of us natives who travel all over the city on a regular basis who have watched significant parts of the city grow and who have seen once beautiful areas deteriorate into so much garbage. And see it be ruined by transplants who have absolutely no respect for the city itself but are sucking the life out of it for their own selfidh, greedy ends. Those same transplants, having come from nasty, seedy places, don't think twice about advising someone that living in the filth of DLA is a good thing and that DLA is a fun place.

Hmm..and these good for nothing transplants from seedy places can figure out how to move to (and thrive in) an expensive city like L.A. and you can't figure out how to get to cheap Hot Springs, AR with all your intelligence and high style living? Yep, you're right, you do know it all. I can't argue with someone that knows everything so you win.

Is there something wrong with Echo Park/Silverlake? It seems like it would be a nice area to live and have a short commute to downtown. It appears not to be as upscale as the neighborhoods on the westside, but the housing stock looks better and more affordable.

I know people who lived and live in Echo Park and love it. The bungalows up the hill above Sunset and NW of Alvarado are reasonable and have some really nice views. Specifically Waterloo and Montana, 90026. There is a ton of stuff to do along that stretch of Sunset: shops, restaurants, farmers market on the weekend. And the Downbeat Cafe on Alvarado, just north of Sunset is a fun jazz hang.
