Default Golf Courses In LA

Hello:

I have recently moved to LA (mid-wilshire area) and am looking for good golf courses to play. I'm not really looking for fancy clubs or a luxury linx. Looking for good value courses that are fairly well maintained at an affordable/budget price - especially for midweek play. Any ideas on where the hidden gems are?

Thanks!

there are at least two golf courses at griffith park. it's a public recreation facility, so i don't imagine that it's expensive compared to the private clubs, but i don't know enough about golf to know what that means in absolute terms. i do know from observation that the custodians and players are very quick to reprimand anyone trying to take a short cut across the course and the spinklers are used regularly to keep the green grass from turning brown, so i would say that it is well-maintained.

I am not a golfer but I do drive around... there are several relatively large (and surely cheap) public golf courses in the South Bay... Chester Washington near Gardena might be the best... also Alondra Park near Lawndale, and Victoria Park near Carson/Dominguez Hills.

A fancier but smaller course exists along Sepulveda south of El Segundo Blvd... I am well aware of it because I'm always wondering how they could have such a low fence, given the thousands of cars driving by there that don't need a ball hitting their windshield.

There's a very nice public course on Pico Blvd and Motor across the street from 20th Century Fox.

Los Verdes Country Club in Rancho PV is a beautiful, hilly, course.
Lakewood golf course
Harbor golf course off the 110 fwy at Harbor Junior College
Lakes at El Segundo is an Executive Course (par 3&4)
Westchester Golf Course off of Manchester Blvd. ( I think it's still only a 16-hole course)

All of these courses will require long wait for tee times and min. 5-hour rounds. But, they're all public courses. Do you have a card? If not, get one or you'll only be able to walk on.

CESpeed mentioned the Rancho Park course, which I believe is an executive course. Also, in Venice there is the Penmar course which I also believe is an executive courses. The real nice courses on this side of the hill are all private, like the LA and Wilshire Country Clubs. For full length courses I think you need to get to Griffith Park as someone had mentioned or out to the Valley. I believe the Sepulveda Basin has 1 or 2 city courses.

Rancho might be an executive course, but it is public. It's run by LA Parks and Recreations.

Rancho Park Golf Course is an 18-hole regulation course- par 71 (tough course too)
In addition to this, there is a 9-hole, executive course- par 27 at the Rancho Park Golf "Club"

You're almost next to the Wilshire Country Club.
