I think the main difference is that you can still have the "LA life" in many surrounding areas, whereas it's not so much the case to have the "SF life" in its surrounding areas. So SoCal people have nothing to lose by dissing LA proper, when they can have "LA" or something very similar in nearby areas.

From what I hear, Los Angeles used to be a safe and well-kept place until it was invaded by the illegals.

And when I say Los Angeles in general is crappy, I'm guessing around 75%. The remaining 25% is nice but out of reach to most, hence all the complaining and bashing of Los Angeles on this board.

For the middle classes, YES Los Angeles is crappy, ugly, crime filled and looks like a ghetto pit. For the upper-middle classes, Los Angeles can feel like a completely different city and most of them are happy.

It's one thing to move away because it wasn't for you, but don't go around bashing the place because not everyone feels the way you do and the world does not revolve around how one person thinks. Don't get me wrong, by no means am i saying that's what you're doing. I'm just using you as an example

As little sense as that makes, I think that you're right. But if they visited somewhere outside the LA area what are they going to tell people? That they are from Glendale? Costa Mesa?Simi Valley? I met a woman that said she was from LA and I asked her where (because i know better). She said Newport Beach. Another woman claimed Riverside as being from LA

I guess the only decent area in the city that is decent and somewhat safe is West LA.

No more so than San Francisco, New York, Philly, Baltimore, D.C, St. Louis, New Jersey. New Yorkers are proud of their sewer rats. They say they can get the rats to kick your *ss

I guess this is the point I was trying to earlier about understanding the perspective of the residents of the South Central Communities. This was eye opening to me. These residents like and have pride in their communities. What I would consider barrio or ghetto they consider normal life. It was evident to me that even if they obtained professional positions they really had no reason to move to westside communities. They felt comfortable where they were at and the lifestyle they lived. In fact, they may have a hard time finding the same lifestyle in other communities that are not as Latino focused. There are large parts of the city that feel like Mexico. I've never seen this in other US cities.

I make a middle class wage and maintain a wonderfull lifestyle here. Living in LA is about being carefull with how you spend your money, you can spend alot of $$ here quick. People that hate LA usually are those in the lower classes who are forced to live in a bad area. I love woodland hills, it is one of the best places I have ever resided in.

i figured thats what kyle was gettin at... no surprise there.

anyhow. everything i need or want is within reach. i consider myself working class. not even middle class. i do own my home, a car(tho i take PT to work), 2.5 kids, the dogs, etc etc. some people might consider that middle class. but i dont really pay too much attention to that stuff. i work and do good, i am worker bee.

i am very happy with what i have, and its not because i got used to living in the getto. because i dont live in the getto. i've seen the getto. i dont live there. i am happy because i find happiness in family and not material things. in my family the kids love their schools, their friends, their sports teams, their neighbors, their life, and all that good stuff. seeing them happy makes me happy.

the are a really good gauge.

as for moving to "westside communities"... why would i do that instead of continuing to improve my community? people make lots and lots of generalizations about areas or cities within LA county they know very little about. they figure that because its predominantly latino (equated with illegals by many), it has to be the pitts!

take it from a resident of a "south LA suburb": its not bad at all.

the day i put bars on my windows or a fence around my yard, then maybe i will worry. sure stuff happens. there is very light graffiti. cars get jacked every now and then, but as of now the kids play ball in the street, a la wonder years, and i sit on my porch sippin away with very few worries.
