That's one of the reasons I love L.A and California is because of the Diversity in practically everything.
I used to live up in Washington State and let's just say that I was Depressed and Bored up there.
Whenever I hear people say they hate L.A or California,I just shrug my shoulders....L.A and this entire State has so much to offer

In my experience, people who've never even visited L.A. feel perfectly free to insult it, make fun of it, diss it...etc. But why?! Probably because they're jealous. When I was living in Dallas, there was SUCH strong hatred of California in general and L.A. in particular, it was mind-boggling. At some point I realized it was because people in Dallas have NOTHING that can compare to what we have here. Take away football, their miserable weather [hot and oppressively humid in summer, cold and icy in winter], the flat, ugly landscape, and the oppressively conservative political climate and what's left? Not much!
As for the comments about L.A. not being a good place if you have kids...um, why not? I live in Arcadia and it's a grand place to bring up children--the San Gabriel mountains are five minutes away, the schools are top-notch, the houses are beautiful, etc. It's unfair to label "L.A." as being a bad place to have kids when it's such a massive, diverse place. Are there crappy areas? Of course, as there are anywhere. But there are also amazing areas.
We're lucky to have such diversity here--everything from the different types of geography (deserts, mountains, ocean, lakes, valleys) to the vast array of ethnicities--to say nothing of weather most people envy, career and entertainment opportunities, progressive thought and open-minded people, etc.
I've been back home for two years and I can state unequivocally that I will NEVER again leave the Los Angeles area or the state of California. I'm THRILLED to be back home.

I've never heard it is the gang capital ... but check out Wikipedia's crime rate by cities.
It provides perspective.
And wasn't Philly the deadliest city last year?

Glad to have you back......Of course it's jealousy. When you have a state that has the world's most beautiful city (S.F.), the world's most glamorous city (L.A. crappy areas and all), the world's finest two-nation vacation (S.D./T.J.) and everything else in between you're going to get a little jealousy.

Yeah but if you read the paragraph on top of that link it will state that annexation cities like (Houston, LA, Jacksonville) usually have lower crime-rates then other cities surrounded by suburbs like (St. Louis, Miami). When in reality they usually have more crime.
LA is called that cause a lot of America's real bad gangs were created there.

A-Stay-bon, please look at a map and see that the area bounded by those freeways is not that large in comparison to the LA metro area. furthermore thos boundaries inlcude cities like culver city and downey and other very nice place to live. and not in the "i got used to the nastiness so im blind to it" niceness. they are places that have million dollar homes.
i think the better boundaries to dictate what is not the most desirable area to live in are the 10, 710,105(or th 91) and the 110(or western ave). but i must say that within this perimter you still have nice areas. relatively quiet and safe like south gate and bell.
so lookin at a map you see plenty of areas that middle class or even aspiring to be middle class people can live in. from carson, to lakewood to cerritos to whittier to alhambra and beyond into the SGV. and thats not even looking at the SFV.
PS positive outlooks make life better.

I'm just a riot I know, I even crack myself up sometimes But here is something else you can chuckle at. When the "BIG ONE" hits and California is destroyed, the U.S. can enjoy losing it's #1 country status
