The homeless people around here (Northridge) are primarily Latino, unless you don't believe I can tell a Latino by looking at one. I believe that the easy pickings here in Los Angeles are part of what attracts people to illegally enter the country. Would you rather work in Tijuana for a lousy $20-$30 per week or pick bottles out of trash cans in Los Angeles for $100-$200 per day?

I've run estimates on how much money a person can make picking bottles out of trash cans, but it would be amusing to run a real experiment, perhaps get a dozen people to work at the same time for a period of 1-2 hours, then turn it all in and see how much money it works out to. You could then calculate wages per hour, and assuming X hours per week calculate total income. I'm confidant from my estimates that it earns more than most of us would expect.

I think the bottles should be left in the recycle cans, and allow the City of Los Angeles to recycle them to offset our trash pick-up fees.

you have run estimates...because you spent a day dumpster diving right? or is it just some number you made up? im sure its the latter. otherwise read that article i linked to your other thread with a similar spin. i think you wre just looking for someone to agree with you. its funny.

i guess someone is funny enough and willing to validate you. but i think dabeez and cespeed hit it pretty much on the head. instead of complaing, they have actually done something prductive and compassionate. i applaud them. and besides these people dont make that much money.

oh and its not an immigration issue. thats just silly. and if they are "latino", how do you know they aint been here for generations. or that they are legal. do you ask them for ID? maybe they are white, but just really dingy? you just dont know. you should instead volunteer and try to understand how people end up in situations like this. thanks for the laughs, but its gettin kinda scary now. your genreralizations are out of this world brother.

The city of LA would never offset your trash fees with the money they make from recycling. If they made money from recycling, they'd find a way to justify a pay raise because of it.

So, let the poor people take your recyclables.

Well, you might not think it, but you'd be wrong. Although I do agree with your comment that being homeless and digging through the trash is not an immigration issue, but here is an interesting article from the LA Times I remembered while reading through this thread, about a woman in Pasadena that does the recycling shtick to make ends meet.

I thought I read that this woman and her husband ended up putting various children through college via dumpster diving/recycling, but that's not the case. Anyway, here is the article:

In RSM-Rancho Santa Margarita dumpster diving is most definitely an illegal mexican immigration issue, without question -and, a very scary aggressive, prison-tattooed Latino gangbanger bunch, not just diving for cans but filmed fishing for social security and credit card numbers.

Prowling trespassers on residential and in private housing communities is not only illegal, it brings a huge security risk and deterrent to a higher quality of lifestyle. If they want to trespass let them be screened with signing in with their name, address, & SOCIAL SECURITY CARD NUMBER at the appropriate offices of the land owner and/or management offices.

Further, well informed and astute CITIZENS know what's going on concerning the rampant illegal trespassing dumpster diving illegal immigrant issue here in So-cal; even a child is known by their acts.

Better yet, let's send them all to your residence and be done with it: these human breeders, with their future US meal-ticket half dozen anchor-babies could use your help accomplishing their objective, no doubt.
