That depends on the kind of rap you want to make...East Coast vs. West Coast.

This may not be the best forum to ask the question; try a music-based forum.

Both are great for music, especially hip hop.

However, the "industry" is in New York. That's where most of the major labels are headquartered.

Regardless of where the music is actually recorded, the heart of the "business" of music is New York.

The shorthand version:

Los Angeles: film/TV production (all the major studios are here) and the porn biz (haha)

New York: music (major labels are here) and media (publishing, news, advertising, radio)

Actually, LA is home to the two largest major labels, Universal and Warner. Sony and EMI are located in NY, but Universal is by far the biggest record company in the industry and is definitely here in LA. They actually moved their remaining NY operations out here to LA in the last couple of years. They have offices over near Universal Studios as well as offices in Santa Monica near the Water Garden. LA also is home to most of the major music publishing companies.

I think most people like you spend time living in both places. I suggest you explore both cities, if you can. Both cities offer plenty of places to hang out and meet people with your interests.
