It's certainly a matter of personal preference but we've always enjoyed Lare's on Pico in Santa Monica.

Best fish tacos--the Whoa Nellie Deli in the Mobile Station--Tioga Gas Mart--at Lee Vining--the turnoff for Yosemite. You get two fish tacos, each totally different from the other. Good steak sandwiches too.

My choice in the western part of los angeles..
Don Antonio's
11755 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles 90064.
Good Food, busy, fun place.
or
El Coyote Spanish Cafe
7312 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036
Fun place for drinks etc. Not the best mex. food in LA though

They have some gnarly taco stands in Mexican nabes, but I got food poisoning last time I ate from a taco stand in East LA! also, many mexican hole in the wall places are getting pretty expensive...capitalizing on people who clamor "authentic" Mexican food?
Anyhow, the best tacos were in DF...65 cent to boot!

I've been there. BTW, that dude in the photo got deported yesterday.

Not exactly LA, but my family's been going to CARMEN'S in Azusa for the past 30 years.
Pepe's is good too and has many locations (Downey and Brea to name a few).

El Coyote is worth going to ... once. Drinks are OK, but the food is just there and the wait is often excessive.

I totally agree with on El Coyote. Food is always okay at best and the wait is flat out awful. I only recommend it as a place for "new to LA types" to go to for drinks - occasionally.
