Jesus Christ
Hey hey, don't you dare talk down on multiculturalism like that! what is your problem, you racist xenophobe?!

I'm a black guy and I live in SF. I have to say, this thread cracks me up. One thing I can tell you, and I'm not being sarcastic in the slightest, I am definitely, for sure, going to visit Glendale at some point, because it sounds like a "must-do," a somewhat rich experience. I already know I would love it.

"the one thing I can say, is that growing up there were no black people here, for one I don't think they were able to afford living here, as I was on my way out of high school, I started noticing a few creeping into the city, and their stay here was not a good one believe me, but now there are many! I guess people now don't mind them coming into the city. I guess then that is the reason for the cities downfall since the late 90's, but oh well."

Wow... ... Nevermind.
...
Just wow.

Talking Yeah go for it!

Did you know that Glendale used to be the HQ for the Ku Klux Klan during the 1980s prior. Being with the law enforcement back then, we used to escort the black folks and other non white individuals working in that area, after sunrise and before sundown to their homes. Good thing the Armenians drove most of the KKK out. Don't worry , Glendale is cool now

Glendale started out as a nice bedroom community for Los Angeles. Quiet, clean, safe, and charming. Brand Blvd. resembled the main street of just about any small town in the Midwest. Which makes sense since the city was founded by people from there.

Over the last say 10 or so years, Glendale has most certainly lost it's charm. The city went on building campaign that resulted in high rises that clutter up the skyline, permitted tear downs of single family homes to make way for apartment buildings and condo complexes, and allowed people to build these ridiculous, over scale homes in the hillsides. The result...way too many people concentrated in too small an area.

The traffic on the three main North/South streets (Brand, Central, and Pacific) is horrendous. Many of the side streets aren't much better because people are attempting to use them as shortcuts to bypass the traffic on the main streets. I gave up trying to go to the Galleria years ago. It's a nightmare to try and access and not worth the effort in my opinion.

Crime wise, the biggest thing you have to deal with is property crime (burglary, auto theft, vandalism). Violent crime is much lower than in Los Angeles itself or some other surrounding cities. By the same token, Glendale is still probably one of the most under policed cities around. Not nearly enough police officers for the population that the city has. They do a pretty good job of keeping a lid on things but they are stretched a little thin.

The school system in Glendale itself is marginal. There are some schools that are better than others to be sure, but over all they have declined since I went through them. There are gang problems in the schools, mostly generated by the ongoing conflict between Hispanics and Armenians. It's actually quite amusing in that the Armenian gangs pattern themselves after the Hispanic gangs, right down to the clothes, the shaved heads, and the music they listen too. Put them side by side and you most likely wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

And yes, Glendale has the largest concentration of Armenians outside of Armenia itself. And they make their presence known. From demands that the city recognize Armenian Holocaust as a official holiday, to wanting the Armenian flag to be flown at City Hall, they very much believe that Glendale is their city. It all causes no end of tension with long time residents of the city.

I could go on, but then I'm guessing someone would accuse me of being just another negative poster. As I said, Glendale is the city of my birth, but I don't consider it home anymore. There are certainly still beautiful parts of the city and I would be happy to list them if you like. But overall, Glendale is not a place that I would recommend to anyone at this point.

Yea I grew up in the area too back in the late 60s and 70s. I have gone back every so often since my parents are buried at Forest Lawn there and have noticed the change.

I go to Glendale a lot (still live close) and used to live there... There are nice parts and trashy parts... lots of Armenians (I've heard it called, "Little Armenia"), but I never had any problem with that at all. It can be frustrating to get around sometimes because of certain main roads (Glendale Blvd., Brand Blvd, etc), but that's LA in general! If you're planning a move, definitely check out your neighborhood first, there are some BEAUTIFUL areas of Glendale.

It is the Armenians that are racists. If the other kids in the school(the whites, hispanics, and blacks) are teaming up on them, it is obvious that THEY get along. THEY are not the racists ones. How much bull**** can any one person take before they act out. Armenians are particularly unfriendly towards gays as well. I know for sure. Someone once told me that the reason they act as they do is because of past repression. That is bull****. Gays and Lesbians have had their share of repression too and we do not act like that. If Armenia was such a better place, what are they all doing here? If they truly loved their home country, why did they leave it behind?

Default Rethink moving to Glendale

Hi. In response to your post. I lived in Glendale for exactly one year, from 2008-2009. I got very depressed;hence, being surrounded by the Middle Eastern Culture became overwhelming for me. Glendale is a community for and about the Armenians. Americans are treated as intruders. Its disturbing how a culture can come to America and treat an American's like a foreigner, but they, overty, get away with it. Note, there is nothing convert about the Armenians distrain for Americans. Lastly, Armenians precieve Americans as suckers. In other words, Armenian's come to American suck off are systems and, then, chuckle behind our back. The only time an Armenian was nice to me in Glendale was when they needed something; like money. A very depressing place. Would not recommend.
