Los Angeles is actually a lot safer than Chicago. I think Chicago is interesting because it has higher crime, but it is not nearly as impoverished as parts of Los Angeles and parts of the rest of Southern California, but that hasn't stopped me from pushing this move.
I been to Los Angeles, and there ghettos look pretty clean(almost like suburbs) except for the graffiti. If you ever been to Englewood & Lawndale, Chicago ghettos make Los Angeles ghettos look like a walk in the park. Chicago overall crime rate is higher than Los Angeles. The Midwest & East Coast poverty is much worser than Los Angeles and the West Coast. In Los Angeles, you don't have that gritty streets look with boarded up houses and businesses like you do in the Midwest & East Coast.

I kinda agree with you but when you say "ghetto" its very vague. If youre referring to the ghetto as all of South L.A., then ya its cleaner than impoverished parts of Chicago. But if youre actually talking about the ghetto(or projects), then places like Nickerson Gardens, Jordan Downs, Imperial Courts are just as grimey and definitely more dangerous than probably anywhere in Chicago(except MAYBE Englewood).
Also I think theres two contributing factors as to why L.A.'s hoods are better looking. Number one is the weather, obviously because its hot year round and we dont get snow like up north our buildings will last longer and for the most part appear nicer. The second reason is the 92 riots. Because of the damage caused in the riots, alot of buildings in the "ghetto" were rebuilt and are fairly new. I think out east, the ghettos are usually some of the oldest parts of the cities.

I doubt that Los Angeles housing projects are more dangerous than Chicago's. Cabrini Green, Henry Horner, and Robert Taylor in there hey day make any Los Angeles Projects look good. Since they tore down alot of Chicago projects, thats one of the reasons why Chicago crime went down over the years. Englewood at one time had over 80 murders in one year back in the 90s with just a 40,000 - 50,000 population. Even though Chicago don't have LA weather year round, Chicago murder rate still is higher than LA. If you look at the news for Chicago, you see how crazy Chicago get with just 4 months of warm weather. Imagine if Chicago had LA weather year round.

Well I dont know about crime but maybe the price of homes among other things in the west coast has something to do with it not being as abandoned . Just my 2 cents.
Los Angeles is #95 on the list. Wanna know what crime is like? Move to Atlanta, Georgia (I live 25mi outside of downtown, transferred [not my choice] in 1991).
In addition to that ... c'mon down here to Georgia (prounounced Jawja), the biggest red state in the USA ... become a GOP, cousin-screwing, bible-beating redneck, arrogant, ignorant "in denial", SOB. Have you ever seen a "W" sticker next to a gay flag on a car? Y'all see it here, yah? Weird!
IF California has a true opposite ... then Georgia certainly fits the bill. How 'bout Jackson, Mississippi? Just lovvvvley hunny chile... <gag>
Then you'll REALLY have something to bitc# about! Be VERY happy where U are at! Only gets WORSE leaving SoCal... Whiners!

I know the pj's in Chicago were real bad but how can you even say they make L.A.'s look good? I mean Watts had 90 murders with a population of 25,000, thats a definitely just as, if not more dangerous than any part of Chi-Town. And before you start trippin telling me how hard Chicago is, I should probly tell you I lived there for a summer(2006) in South Shore so I know what goes down. Both cities get down but in different ways, I dont think you can confidently say one city is worse than the other because both have some of the country's most notorious areas.
You have to remember that when you say LA's crime rate is descent for a big city you are not including the crime ridden suburbs of LA, such as Compton, Inglewood, Lynwood, South Gate, Vernon, Hawthorne, Long Beach, Van Nuys, Gardena, City of Industry and Commerce, Carson and on and on. All of those cities are almost triple the national crime rate but are not included in the overall crime rate of the CITY of Los Angeles since these are considered separate cities themselves. P.S. I could name about twenty more cities in LA metro with just as bad crime!

You are right, about Chicago and LA have some of the country's worst neighborhoods and both cities are consider the gang capitals of america. I was just saying you can't say LA worst neighborhoods are more poverty stricken than Chicago's. The statistics even prove Chicago is a little more dangerous than LA. But you have to admit, if it wasn't for the blue light cameras everywhere, handgun ban, and the cold winters, Chicago would have been worse. And I live in Chicago area, and I know whats going on in the city, and my sister's father work for an program like ceasefire by working with gang member not to retaliate and help them get jobs.

Is that 90 murders in one year in Watts accurate? According to Wikipedia there were 500+ murders between 89-05 which makes it a 10-12 a year average. I know out here in NY for example the East New York neighborhood was hovering around the 125-130 homicide mark with a population of 90,000 in the late 80's early 90's
It depends on where you go. If you go to south central LA or parts of Long Beach and some parts of Santa Monica beach areas, yeah you get crime.
I think over all the Gang crime is under control right now. It is getting pretty expensive to live here as they always find ways to raise taxes and fees. It is expensive because every one wants to live here.
