How is the business climate in LA? By LA, I mean the entire county/region, not just the city. Is LA business-friendly, hostile, or neutral?

Depends upon specific industry...

Generally, CA's tax struc/regulations are anti-business for many employers....prob places like TX are far more friendly for many businesses....

Need to consider how dependent is business upon highly educated/intelligent workers and/or high-end customers.....where regions like Manhattan/SF/BevHills/Chic are clearly world's leading regions....

For ex., in some industries like finance (esp hedge funds/pvt equity), one needs to be located in high-tax/high COL regions like Manhattan/Greenwich/SF/BevHills/Chic to attract any competent employees....and, in tech, most of the smartest engineers want to work/live in SiliconValley....

If you have something people want/need and can deliver it in an affordable manner, (affordable is relative) and position yourself where people will have easy access to you and your business, you'll do great. Just remember, the more high end you get, the better your service wll have to be. ie Wal-Mart has the world's worst customer service yet it thrives. Why? There are enough poor people who need lower prices more than good service. Would the "Wal-Mart" way survive in Beverly Hills? Not even for a week. Good Luck.

Plenty of money in Los Angeles. It does depend on the industry. People are very entrepreneur-friendly though. Steve Peasley the financial adviser is sometimes LA focused, he's on InvestTalk radio (Investtalk.com for their podcasts, which is how I listen – set up in my iTunes subscription, though I don't think you need iTunes – you can just stream live). I like the show because it's down to earth, not smarmy/pushy. They have financial guests, take calls, and such – and they're personable, spending time with each person or issue to their needs.

Business here seems to depend a lot on industry. If you are efficient enough and have a good client base, then business is better then ever.
