Opinion on Chicago
What is an Angeleno's opinion on Chicago? Both Los Angeles and Chicago's have their fair share of positives and negatives, but what makes Los Angeles or Chicago better than the other?

I tend to view LA and Chic as a couple of most desirable, but different, urban regions in which to live/work....arguably, only regions that exceed LA/Chic in economic/intellectual power are NYC and SiliconValley....
Chic is a bit less cosmopolitan....many of its residents are from Midwest....its industries are less powerful in attracting smart, interesting people from all over globe than are those in NYC and SV...
LA's media/entertainment industry is not known for its intelligence/sophistication, but LA's Westside seems to be a favored wkend home choice for many affluent, rather smart people from SiliconValley/NYC/Chic, etc....LA's Westside/Malibu is undoubtedly one of world's most enjoyable/civilized wkend playgrounds and attracts an interesting, insightful mix of wkend residents...
If need to raise/educate kids, prob much easier/cheaper to accomplish in Chic's NS suburbs than anywhere in LA region....
As an offset for Chic's awful winter cold/snow and summer heat/humidity, IL does have a notably lower state inc tx than CA....and houses/land in best areas of Chic/NS are easily 30%+ cheaper than comparable areas of LA....(desirable BevHills land is some $10MM/ac, whereas desirable Eastern LF land is only some ?$2-3MM/ac)...

Well Lake Forest is over 30 miles from Chicago. You should try looking at those figures in say Kenilworth or Winnetka, that would be more comparable to Beverly Hills pricing.

I think Chicago is terrific... but I'm not a native Angeleno. I'm originally from Ohio. Chicago excels in many area where LA is lacking, like transit and urban fabric/skyline. LA excels in areas where Chicago is lacking as well, like weather and topography. Overall, I think the two cities complement each other well and neither is better than the other.

Does being in Chicago twice for airplane stops count? Actually, I'd love to visit! Unfortunately, I can't afford to travel right now (two kids in college!), but maybe in a few years.

In a weird way Chicago and L.A. are MUCH more alike than to their oft compared rival New York.
