California Chicken Cafe on Melrose is good.
Cobras and Matadores is fun, with a great BYOB with no corkage fee.

Firtunately I've never had crappy service and I think it's reasonably priced. You get really large portions. I always have left overs.

Where to start...

They are going to build a mixed use project there (condos/businesses) but nothing has really happened except some detail around the windows was removed. It just sits there looking sad. I miss it.
I love Sir Winston's on the Queen Mary. The atmosphere is fairly formal and old-world without being too stuffy. It's the closest thing to having dinner on the Titanic. The'll feed you for 2 1/2 solid hours, ending with a candleabra of chocolate covered strawberries even if you've already enjoyed their Creme Brulee'. Yes, not waistline friendly and that's why I only do it once or twice a year. Lately I'm eating at Astro Burger on Melrose a lot. They have a great Vegetarian menu. They make their onion rings from scratch and emulate many traditional diner dishes albeit veggie. Brite Spot in Echo Park has a veggie menu too and the food is awesome. I love to eat at Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake as I love to see the hot cars on Friday night and the food isn't bad either. The two below in Honorable Mention are both withing walking distance. Palermo in Los Feliz Village gets my nod for good, old fashioned Italian food. You'll usually see a movie star or two. Yes, CCF is awesome, I usually eat the food over 3 different meals (to go). Clifton's Cafeteria on S. Broadway, Downtown is a great old fashioned cafeteria with an interesting motif...it even has it's own waterfall. I eat there whenever I'm downtown. I love, love, LOVE their macaroni! House of Pies in Los Feliz Village is all about the pie. The rest of the food is ho-hum. Pecan and Strawberry pies are out of this world! For 24-hour dining, I go with Swingers...both the one on Beverly and the one in Santa Monica. It's usually full of cool people and the food is good too. They have sensational salads. Fred 62 in Los Feliz Village is another great 24-hour option for the same reasons as Swingers but I can walk to it. They have a great veggie sandwich. I have to take it apart to eat it as I'm not an alligator ~ Mi Piace in Pasadena is a no-brainer for the sidewalk dining and great food. Thai Patio in Thaitown on Hollywood Blvd just east of Western (East Hollywood) has great food, live entertainment, great atmosphere, friendly service and it's CHEAP! Kung Pao Kitty is on Hollywood Blvd west of Hollywood and Vine. Food is awesome with an upbeat, modern atmosphere. It turns clubby later in the evening.
An honorable mention is Priscilla's Coffee in Toluca Lake. Technically it's not a restaurant but the baked goods are phenomenal and the baked goods are out of this world. Toluca Garden (Chinese restaurant) just up Riverside is great Chinese and they have cheap lunch specials.
I have many, many more but I suppose this will suffice for now.

Rep points to you for mentioning Priscillas. That as MY place for quite a few years when I lived in Toluca Lake. It was a big neighborhood deal when Starbucks opened across the street. No one went to Starbucks for intruding on the neighborhood coffee house. Shannon, the gal who owns Priscillias is one of the sweetest, nicest, people you'll ever meet.

Yeah, Priscilla's is great. I haven't had the baked goods there, but the coffee was good. And that place has fun memories for me - I stopped there right before my Warner Bros. interview and then celebrated there after I got the job!
