What are the demographics like today? How's it holding up? Still raise a family there?

Demographics today compared to when?

Go to the Los Angeles city page on this site and look up Mar Vista.

I live in the area, what do you want to know specifically?

From my experiences in the area, the SFH neighborhoods have held up quite well and the listing prices on homes in the area will reflect this. Howver, the higher density housing is real hit and miss. Many areas are younger professionals avoiding the high prices of venice and santa monica, but some areas are also low income immigrant communities. It's usually pretty obvious to tell which type of area you are in as you drive through. As for raising a family, if you can afford to buy a home there, you can also probably afford to send your kid(s) to private school, so it might just be a good place to raise a family.
