I know it's longer the further you are from the front gate, but generally how long is the drive?

45 minutes depending on snow etc. if there is snow, they can and do shut the front gate at BVS which stinks! hope this helps. The freeway is 10 min. from the "main gate" in Bear valley springs to the actual town of Tehachapi. I am very familiar with the drive, I used to reside in Stallion Springs, located next to BVS!

So the drive from both BVS and Stallion Springs is about the same? Are there any shortcuts at all?

And what do you mean they close the gate if it snows? Are you saying you are trapped in and they won't let you out? (Or worse yet, it snows while you are out of the area, say, at work, they won't let you back in to get to your house?)

When I lived at the top of Jacaranda (in BVS) it took me 1-1/2 hours to get to Bakersfield.

Yeah, when the roads in Bear Valley, or Hwy 202 is closed, they shut the gates. You are correct, if the gates are shut when you're away from home you cannot get back to your house until they are re-opened. But that's a matter of how bad the storm is and how quickly they can get the roads plowed. It's no biggie... You learn to deal with it, pay attention to the weather, and respond accordingly.

There are no short-cuts.

There is an old dirt road that goes from the back of Bear Valley and drops down into Arvin... It used to be a shortcut, but I don't think you'd want to try that. Sometimes that gate gets locked too, as it is private.
