Ended up going to Palms Thai. Very good and I'll definitely go again! Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to try them all as the time progresses. Whenever I feel like Thai or Chinese, I'll just recheck this post as a reminder.

Thanks again!

everyone who recommended thai town was right - that's the best place for thai food in the hollywood area, and as a bonus, most of the restaurants there are open very late (until 3am or 4am). so it's a great place to eat after partying or if you get the midnight munchies.

my favorite place on the thai town strip is ruen pair (hollywood blvd @ harvard blvd), but really, all of these places tend to be a notch or two above the typical "westernized" fare served at most other thai places in the city.

as an interesting side note, it's the only thai town in the entire country and possibly the world outside of thailand:

a quick note on chan dara -
it's definitely a cool place to hang out, but the food is nothing special by la standards when you consider that some of the best thai food in the entire country is in la. prices are also a bit more expensive than the typical thai place due to ambience and so forth. i'd say it's a good place to take a date or a group of friends who aren't picky about authenticity and care more about decor and the "scene".

and as someone else mentioned, the place to get really great chinese food in la county is in the san gabriel valley (alhambra, san gabriel, monterey park, temple city, arcadia, etc). i don't know of any chinese restaurant in hollywood or on the west side that i would consider even decent.

Default Thai Patio ROCKS!

Thai Patio is on the north side of Hollywood Blvd just east of Western. Nice atmosphere, friendly service, great food, great prices and live entertainment. What else could you want?

Sanam Luang Cafe

12980 Sherman Way
North Hollywood, CA 91605

I've have not been to the one in Hollywood but if it is anything like the Pomona restaurant, you will be able to get a relatively inexpensive and delicious meal. I always get two General Noodles with soup. They know me there...

I work with a Thai woman. She had never been to Sanam Luang before; she went to the Pomona location and she said it was good.
