Building that new prison did not do the A.V. area any good. People have moved from Los Angeles so they can be close to prison so they can go on visiting days.
First, the prison is not new, it has been there over 14 years!
Second, I have lived here for over 7 years and granted there is quite a section 8 on the East side of both Palmdale and Lancaster, West is nice and actually getting better.
Most who move here for the prison, cannot afford the West side.

Talking Palmdale has a lot of potential--just needs you!

You might be able to find a house in Rosamond, Cal City, or Mojave for $1100 per month. I doubt you will a house in Palmdale or Lancaster for $1100.

The housing market is horrible right now. Homes are still being built in the Area but no one is touching them. If history repeats itself in the area we will see a ton of foreclosers.
If you care, you'll be there. Saturday April 28 1:30 to 3:30 at Senior Center Ballroom 1002 E Ave Q-12. As a "soon to be" resident of Palmdale, I was delighted to check out the city of palmdale (dot) org (all one word) to see that the city is desparate for intelligent minds such as those I have been reading in these posts to get to the root of some solutions for a city that holds a lot of promise. Turns out, I'll be in Palmdale home shopping this weekend so I hope I see many of you at the following. Your city needs you to be positive, optimistic and supportive. Change is emminent. With your participation, the opportunity exists to be a positive change.

Default Are people who visit prisoners criminals?

while I will agree that having a prison probably isn't an assett to any area, I'm hoping that we can glean some wisdom and take action in the way that a city like San Francisco has managed to deal with it's prison, San Quentin. It's a city with a population of over 720k people, much ethnic diversity, not a drastic difference in median income (about $10k higher for SF) and a HUGE difference in median home price. Crime is truly an issue in Palmdale, the big difference I can see related to the population of SF and Palmdale is the higher education. Most criminal activity is a sign of someone feeling powerless. Are there ways to empower the criminal element so they feel hopeful about their future? I do believe someone who receives a proper elementry education feels higher education is even possible for them. Even if they don't pursue higher education they tend to take more pride in themselves, their family and their community. But, that's a grass roots campaign. We have a prison in Palmdale--if the people who visit the prisoners are a problem, how can that be managed? Do you have any ideas?

It is nothing like you are stating. If you have nothing of value to ad except false assumptions maybe you should, drop it, or get you facts straight, instead of relying on someone's brother's uncle. ( You do know that people can visit prisoners on any day right??) Not like you could admit you were wrong when you said it was a new prison, now you have to back up and make other excuses.

The Prison isn't even in Palmdale, it is in North Lancaster...miles outside of Palmdale.
The problem is (and it is minor), is that some folks who have people in the prison are renting or buying in the Lancaster area so that they can more freely visit people they know that are incarcerated.

I'd take a prison anyday over the place I grew up in - We had a nuclear power station, an oil refinery, a place that made the lead in gasoline (when there was lead in gas that is) etc... Yes, Ellesmere Port in the North Western section of the United Kingdom where I grew up had all the dirty, filthy industries....no wonder when I grew up and had my children all 3 of them have learning difficulties...ranging from Autism to problems learning to read properly. You guys don't know how good you have it - people moaning about a prison of all things - GET A LIFE!!!!

I'm glad you clarified that because I was having difficulty finding it on any maps...Thank goodness for you, MBJ. I'm glad you live in Palmdale! Same with you mumof3. I'm looking forward to see what people have to say at tomorrow's community meeting. OK, I'm off to the airport.

If you fall for their line of garbage, you deserve what you get.

Palmdale and Lancaster are the new ghettos of Southern California. Section 8 is rampant, as it the crime. Many apoligists try to gloss over that area's problems, but they are considerable. ANYWHERE else is better...except maybe San Bernardino...or Moreno Valley. I got out before the market crashed, and boy am I EVER go grateful for my sagacity in making THAT decision! Lancaster was the worst place I've ever lived, and I'm a fourth generation native of this area.
