I'd like to buy a condo somewhere within sane commuting distance to Glendale (30 minutes??? or less). I've done the hour and 45 minute commute thing in D.C. and the Bay Area and don't really want to do it again. Where should I be looking? I'm a 42-year old single empty nester. Is Pasadena too soccer momish? I really like Pasadena every time I am there, plus there are a bazillion condos, but I've been told it is a little too sanitized. What about Los Feliz/Silverlake? Too young for me? West Hollywood? Sherman Oaks, Encino? I'd love to be in Santa Monica, but I can't stomach the commute.

Would like to be near good running/biking areas. Do NOT want to be in a slimy singles scene, but I don't want to be the only single person over 40 either! Looking for a very walkable neighborhood...would like to be able to park my car on Friday afternoon and not get in it again until Monday morning unless I'm headed for the beach, etc. Extra points if you tell me the town PLUS a good condo complex there!

Pasadena is probably your best bet. Glendale would work too, eh? You could think about downtown L.A. for ease of commute and it's soft prices but your other criteria of carless weekends and nearby recreational will be challanged. Yes SH and Studio City are close and Ventura Blvd is a great shop/walk environment. Los Feliz/Silverlake are young/hipster/artiste'.

Pasadena is definitely not too "soccer-momish". It's lovely with a diverse vibrant population. It has the Gold Line, plenty of parks (Huntington Gardens, plenty of hiking in the mountains, and more), as well as ease-of-commute and plenty of cultural events.

Los Feliz is a great pick as well. It has the red line, Griffith Park, and all your other wishes combined.

OK. Cool. I did some exploring in Los Feliz and Pasadena this week to compare. I agree. I think Pasadena is it! Los Feliz seems too dense (population-wise) for me. Thanks!

Pasadena is my favorite hands down but Glendale is a fine place to live too. I always suggest "live where you work".
