Between Hispanics and African Americans, Hispanics and Euro Americans, etc.?
I read somewhere that racial tension, GENERALLY, has begun to increase as many immigrants (legal or illegal) begin to relocate into what were once predominately black neighborhoods. And I think the reason for the long commutes in the LA metro area are simply because people aren't very open to integration, so they move further and further away from the core city, which results in longer driving times. Diversity is a good thing, if it's made correctly. People moving in, not assimilating American ways, to take over will result in major problems. However, people moving in that will learn to live the American way, will most likely not result in major problems. What can be done to stop this? I hate racial tensions. I wish people would just look past skin color and realize all people are not the same, and that everyone can offer something if they really want to. |

LA is like ten different countries(not cultures) in one big city. Yes, a peace treaty might help.

There are race issues, but the media loves to hype it up and seek out stories that sensationalize the issue. Instead of showing stories which show how commuties are doing well intregrating they take an incident here and there, like the one in Inglewood, and make it sound like all he^& is cutting loose between different groups. And to top it off, they grandstand race baiters such as our local versions of Al Sharpton.
Unfortunately the media is part of the problem and should instead help be part of the solution... |

This is an awfully interesting question.... The world of today shows that it is not only racial tensions, what about religions.... ? Look at what happens all over the world, the problems with the radical muslims (and I do not mean the people with the muslim religion who are living peacefully and do not support the radical wing, because there are muslims who are wonderful people... don't get me wrong. I agree.. when one comes to live in a foreign country it makes sense to embrace parts of that culture. Even though I do not like turkey I will f.i. celebrate Thanksgiving, an American holiday with my own cultural twist. But I do respect and try to understand the American way of thinking, I question certain things in this country. Of course I do. Nothing is perfect !! I read so much negativity towards foreigners on this site that it feels very uncomfortable.... I fully agree with some of the members that it should be a rule that any person who wants to live in this country should be able to speak English, whether their background is Turkisch, Russian, Swiss, German, Mexican or Dutch. That's all besides the point... the basic language is English and it should be a mandatory. It's great that there is also a lot of Spanish, absolutely, it's probably part of the history that so many Mexicans are here. But the basic language should be English... After all: this is America But the basic ground rule for moving to another country should be: you move to a new place where you have to build up your life, find a job, make friends... embrace that place. I am Dutch, I will still celebrate my own Dutch holidays and on top of that I get the American ones... It's possible to have best of both worlds, but it does take a positive attitude and a lot of energy. It's not easy to move to another country, but it's a choice. When I told my friends over the globe that I would live in the USA (my husband is from the US) everybody reacted almost in horror, it's no secret that America is not popular at the moment but that is not because of the people hwo live there, that has nothing to do with the way the Americans live their life... but let's face it: if life is so bad in the USA, then why is a greencard one of the most desirable pieces of paper ? Go figure. What can be done about racial tensions ? I think that a positive attitude and learning from each other's cultures is already very important, try to see and get the best of out other cultures, it can enrichen our lives, be open-minded. But, having said that, I can imagine that people who do have to live in a neighbourhood with a lot of crime see things differently.... and that's very understandable. |

To again bring up the Havard Univer. diversity study by Doctor Putnam:
Prof. Putnam found trust was lowest in Los Angeles, ‘the most diverse human habitation in human history.’ in effect: diversity-^ trust-v "In the presence of [ethnic] diversity, we hunker down. We act like turtles. The effect of diversity is worse than had been imagined. And it’s not just that we don’t trust people who are not like us. In diverse communities, we don’t trust people who do look like us." —Harvard professor Robert D. Putnam http://www.amconmag.com/2007/2007_01_15/cover.html |

True. There are racial problems because Latino Immigrants tend to hold very negative stereotypes towards African Americans and in general the Mexicans who migrate to the U.S. have little education, little culture and many cant even write their native language of Spanish fluently. May sound a little harsh but think about it. Its not the upper class of Mexico leaving. MANY OF THEM ARE MORE PREJUDICED THAN AMERICAN WHITES. I KNOW BECAUSE I AM AFRICAN AMERICAN AND I SPEAK SPANISH FLUENTLY. Keep in mind that Mexico is a very large country and unlike most other Latin American countries like Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic or Costa Rica for example, all ar much smaller, Mexico has a very small Afro Latin population and many land locked areas of Mexico did not benefit as much from the mixture of the races that occured in Latin American countries major with major sea ports during the shipping of merchandise, goods, and slaves throughout history. Therefore the mexicans that come from the fincas, farms and ranches have probably never seen a black person before and goes into shock when they encounter anyone who doesnt have facial features of Native American Indians or Indigenous to be more politically correct as they are mainly an ethnicity made of Spanish, French and Indigenous cultures.
It takes every bit of my energy to stop short of calling them STUPID. A co worker of mine in L.A. was a black guy from CUBA who was obviously of the black race and does not have the stereotypical Latin mulato look that many in the Latin community would lead you to believe is the LATIN LOOK. He would tell me stories about how he would go into Mexican restaurants and order in Spanish but the Mexicans would always respond in English. THE POOR GUY DOESNT SPEAK ENGLISH VERY WELL. When it finally sunk into their heads that he didnt speak english the Mexicans would ask him were he was from. When he said Cuba they didnt believe him. LIKE I SAID BEFORE MOST MEXICAN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS DONT HAVE A DROP OF CULTURE. [mod cut; offensive] Last edited by SandyCo; 02-05-2007 at 09:39 PM. Reason: offensive to Mexicans |

While everyone is entitled to their opinions, please keep the tone civil and less inflammatory. As it is, I am one step from moving this thread to the political or immigration forum. Thank you.

LIKE I SAID BEFORE MOST MEXICAN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS DONT HAVE A DROP OF CULTURE quote You see, reactions like this make me incredibly sad and uncomfortable.... Yes, freedom of speech. But with freedom of speech comes a sense of responsibility. This forum should not be used to hurt or talk other people down. I hope that one day you will be able to look at things in a different way, more open-minded and not in this harsh way. Nobody and no situation will get better as long as these awful things are being said. |

What Blksophisticato is saying is the truth, not no candy coated local news network stuff. The media might be hyping it up but serious race issues exists. Ask anyone in any jails in Cali. Latins have squeezed African-Americans in jails and in parts of LA commonly known as the hood. Remember the move "Colors" in the 80s?. South Central has a rapidly growing Latin populace.
Its probably too late for LA from being a municipality run by the Latin power base. As far as American whites being so racists, I think there are other groups in this country that are as much, if not more racists, than they are. |
