it would be more accurate to say that you would have to worry about dying there. boyle heights is one of the most dangerous, gang infested parts of the city. hollenbeck station is among the toughest LAPD details.

I used to work for the Southern California Gas Company reading gas meters. Several of my routes were in Boyle Heights; I was walking around in there at least three times a month over the course of four years.

With that said. I would NOT live there.

It is basically a working class neighborhood. Keeping in mind that working class neighborhoods can be nice (I grew up in one), this neighborhood was poorly maintained. The housing stock is relatively old and the infrastructure appears neglected. Poorly maintained yards, bars on windows, etc.

Regarding crime, I have no info. What I will say is that these houses always had very vicious dogs. To me that's an indicator that either the owners are mean to their dogs (which says a lot about them), or the dogs have to deal with intruders (which says a lot about the place). Arguably, you could say that it was because I was there that the dogs were mean. But then again, I've been to neighborhoods that were 'safe' and the dogs there were cool.

I don't know what your budget is. But I think you should keep looking...
